Highway Solos Musicians Unite for Italy’s Covid 19 Disaster

Covid 19 Fundraiser

We have always thought that music unites.

In every area, in every genre, in every situation, Music is inspiration, Music has the power to raise us above human events, Music gives wings to our hopes …
And the hope is what we all hold on to today, so that we can return to our lives as soon as possible and defeat this health emergency that is upsetting and destroying our lives.

But to do this, there is also a need for the desire and commitment of each of us, because only all together we are strong, united and we can fight and win.

With “HIGHWAY SOLOS”, Elevate Records wanted to engage in a beneficial project with some of the best Italian musicians, physically divided but spiritually united and connected to each other, in a song that is an imaginary journey along one of the hundred highways that connect our wonderful country .
Today more than ever, we gather around those who are indomitable in trying to save lives, amid a thousand difficulties and lack of tools and means to deal with this pandemic in an adequate way; for this reason all the musicians involved in “HIGHWAY SOLOS” propose to raise funds in favor of the SACCO hospital in Milan,ITALY,  committed to the forefront of the virus emergency, by purchasing the piece that bears its name for this project on the digital stores and through the company.

This massive collaboration, in which each person involved gave their contribution completely free of charge, was carried out in a very short time in order to be able to contribute as quickly as possible to face a terrible and unexpected danger.

Through this passage you will be able to carve out an emotional space in which to travel, in which to feel only positive vibrations, in which to perceive that united you can really make a difference in a moment when you need one another, even from a distance.

UNITED, TO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.

Gothic Urban Blues New High Calibre Album from Harry Stafford

Manchester-based indie music stalwart Harry Staffordpresents his new album ‘Gothic Urban Blues’ viaBlack Lagoon Records, previewed by singles ‘She Just Blew Me Away’ and ‘Painted Ocean’, a smokey, barroom piano-blues lament that is “a message that riffs on a sublime ‘painted’ ocean, which, while once was a heaving beautiful living thing, is now a dump!” says Harry Stafford.

This is an album about the Metropolis, the naked city, the urban sprawl and the need to get back to the ripped back streets when you’re far away. If there are a million stories in the naked city, here are a few to keep you warm.

Mixed and engineered by Ding Archer (The Fall, PJ Harvey) at his 6Db Studio in Salford, this album was co-produced by Archer and Harry Stafford and was Inspired by the musings of such jazz and blues stalwarts as Mose Allison and Hoagy Carmichael.

Harry Stafford is best known as founder, guitarist and vocalist of post-punk gothic rockers Inca Babies. His band Guitar Shaped Hammers includes drummer Rob Haynes (The Membranes, Inca Babies), trumpeter Kevin Davy (Lamb, Cymande), guitarist Andy Mills, and Vincent O’Brien on Weisseborn slide guitar.

Formed in the early 1980s, Inca Babies released four albums and multiple singles and Peel sessions. Much of his musical career has been spent with Inca Babies, playing across Europe and the world but in 2015, after 35 years with Inca Babies, Stafford decided to release untamed solo material that echoes his love of blues piano and barroom ballads.

The new album ‘Gothic Urban Blues’ and debut solo album ‘Guitar Shaped Hammers’ (2017), are the inevitable result, reflecting a multitude of ideas around a driving yet lilting punk-piano blues. The idea was for Stafford to leave his noisy electric guitar behind – abandoning everything he held and cherished – to make some new music with a piano and a head full of ideas.

The new album features a more defined sound of a band finding its stride. The band is here forth called Guitar Shaped Hammers to reflect this cohesion of musical unity – with more guitars from Vincent O’Brien, and an additional layered sonic blast from Nick Brown (The Membranes). With intense percussion from Rob Haynes and a truly masterful trumpet contribution from jazz supremo Kevin Davy, the result is very much the soundtrack of a basement radio station stumbling across a new genre they’ve tagged Gothic Urban Blues.

“It was important to reassemble these musicians again as there was a lot of ground we hadn’t covered. I had about fourteen songs and selected ten to be on the record. They were songs I had been playing around the bars of Manchester in order to hone into a neat arrangement,” says Harry Stafford.

“I rehearsed with Rob and Vincent and we laid down a foundation, allowing Nick and Kevin to add their unique elements. Their parts were there to compete and yet complement each other. Kevin is a hugely in-demand jazz musician, who graces the funk of Cymande and the smooth grooves of Lamb, not to mention his jazz workshops in London. I wanted Kevin to radiate his love of Miles Davis and send a wave of goosebumps and steely soul through the spine of this sound. Nick, with a guitar born of jagged punk and sinister drones, was to create a brittle edge to balance the beauty.”

The ‘Gothic Urban Blues’ LP is now available everywhere, including iTunes and Spotify. It is also available for pre-order on vinyl and CD via the artist’s Bandcamp (the physical release will occur closer to summer). The launch performance by Harry Stafford and Guitar Shaped Hammers will be announced at a later date.

Now, more than ever, there is a huge need for fans to be supporting their favourite artists by getting their merch. Across the world, the message has been received and fans are trying to do their part, but what about the bands who don’t already have merch amidst this crisis?

Joseph Knox-Wheeler, the Brisbane-based musician and now founder of The Merch Desk (launching Friday March 27) has the solution for artists and musicians to help them start selling merch within hours. Wheeler states:

“The Merch Desk is designed to remove all barriers that would otherwise stop artists offering merch to their fans and supporters. The Merch Desk costs nothing to get started and with their help artists can be selling to their fans in hours not weeks.”

Each artist is given a profile. The designs are then uploaded and prices are set to whatever they’d like. Artists are shown the cost of each item and the profit that would be made from each item. All they have to do then is send their fans to The Merch Desk.

Wheeler has teamed up with the Brisbane-based company, The Print Barwho process, print and ship the merch directly to the customer within 3-5 business days. This means no waste, no upfront costs and no financial risks for artists.

Description Of How Printing Works

In this crisis, Wheeler’s only goal is to help Australian artists, this is why they only retain $1 from each item sold to cover website and running costs.

This means, that the average profit from a shirt (Small to X-large) sold at $30 is just over $20. $20 to the artist, $1 to The Merch Desk and the rest to cover the cost of producing the merch to The Print Bar.

Furthermore, artists who are stuck for designs, The Merch Desk has them covered too. Wheeler has partnered with Jimmy Patch , a Brisbane-based illustrator and graphic designer who can help artists get awesome designs completed, so they can start selling merch as soon as possible.

That’s not all though, there is more good news. This new platform isn’t just for musicians, this is for any creative out there, from designers, illustrators, comedians, or anyone who lives off gig culture!

Artists can sign up to The Merch Desk ahead of the launch via the sign-up form at https://themerchdesk.com.au/, or by email at: joseph@themerchdesk.com.au

Dig Your Roots into New Punk Rock from Soraia

The Sound Of Amongst Liars Are a Loud and Fierce Powerhouse

Punk Rock Band

Philadelphia rock quartet Soraia release their new album ‘Dig Your Roots’ today, March 13 via Steven Van Zandt’s label Wicked Cool Records.

The album, produced and engineered by Geoff Sanoff (Bruce Springsteen, Fountains Of Wayne, Dashboard Confessional) is now available for pre-order / pre-save with three instant grat tracks, including the brand new single “Dangerous” (which had its debut on David Fricke’s SiriusXM ‘Writer’s Block’ show last night, and is this week’s “Coolest Song in the World” on Little Steven’s Underground Garage) as well as the tracks “Still I Rise” and “Evergreen.”

Soraia epitomizes raw power, unrelenting energy, chaos, and freedom. With a live show that is frenetic and intensely interactive, the band’s chemistry has been cemented through years of fierce, persistent touring from the dingiest dives to the most massive amphitheaters, helping them attract a worldwide fanbase.

Personal growth, rebirth, even revolution – such transformative concepts are the heart of what Soraia is all about. These heady themes inform the songs on Dig Your Roots, the band’s latest album, out today on Wicked Cool Records.

“I look at Dig Your Roots as a continuation of what was begun on Dead Reckoning,” says singer and frontwoman ZouZou Mansour of the new album’s relationship to their 2017 Wicked Cool LP. That record’s release prompted Rolling Stone/Mojo scribe David Fricke to write Soraia’s “searing guitars, burning soul and true CBGB grit…are the rock you need, in your face now.”

“Dig Your Roots is coming to terms with the light and dark inside myself and in the world,” ZouZou shares. “I come from a diverse multicultural and multireligious background – my father was Muslim and Egyptian, and my mother was Belgian and Catholic. I was ‘different,’ and I hid some of my background from people, thinking I wouldn’t be accepted. Digging my roots is being proud of who I am, letting it come before me even at times, being proud of where I come from, and asking the listener to do the same.

“Dig Your Roots also refers to loving what grounds you: the people, the lifestyles, the places you live, where you grew up. It’s being willing to dig up your roots and re-plant if where you are no longer keeps you free – metaphorically, of course. Inherently, I want this to be the message of the record: if you’re down, get up.”

As a spiritual descendent of iconic women in rock such as Patti Smith and Joan Jett, ZouZou’s Philadelphia-based band also embodies elements of kindred spirits of the ’90s and beyond – like PJ Harvey and The Kills, with more than a sprinkling of ’60s Garage Rock and Soul. Their primal sonic attack spreads a message of perseverance through trials of love, loss and letting go.

Bassist Travis Smith continues to be a crucial root of the Soraia tree, co-writing five of the album’s new songs with ZouZou, including “Superman Is Gone” and “Wild Woman.” “Travis delved into places on this album that we didn’t go to on the last record,” she reveals. “That’s scary. But he did it, which ultimately made me do it, too. It’s like, ‘Hold my hand, we’re going into this dark cave, and who knows what’s going to happen…”

Roots also finds drummer Brianna Sig with her first Soraia co-write, the enchanting “Don’t Have You.” “Her melody for the choruses reminded me of how The Sirens would lure sailors in Greek mythology,” ZouZou relates. “It was haunting and beautiful – and if Soraia isn’t both of those things, then I don’t know what we’re doing here.”

The band faced an unexpected challenge when guitarist Mike Reisman, who co-wrote four Dig tracks, including 2019 single “Evergreen,” left the group. “Mike can’t tour for longer periods of time anymore,” says ZouZou. “It hurt. He still works with us and we still connect. But you grow closer with who remains, and grow yourself.” Going forward, Nick Seditious is handling guitar duties.

Further nourishing their roots is the continued support of Wicked Cool’s Stevie Van Zandt. The label head has been an advocate ever since naming their breakout track “Love Like Voodoo” the Coolest Song in the World on his syndicated radio show and SiriusXM channel Little Steven’s Underground Garage in 2013. In January 2020, Dig Your Roots’ opening cut “Dangerous” becomes the tenth Coolest Song they’ve earned.

Van Zandt has even become a creative collaborator, penning “Why” for Dead Reckoning and co-writing two Roots tunes: 2019 Coolest Song “Still I Rise” and forthcoming single “Darkness (Is My Only Candle).” “I trust him more than anyone in knowing what I’m trying to say and who I am,” says ZouZou.

Complementing them in the studio once again is producer/engineer Geoff Sanoff, whose credits include notable work with Bruce Springsteen, Fountains Of Wayne and Dashboard Confessional. “He’s a member of the band when we’re in there,” ZouZou acknowledges.

Soraia has come a long way since their punked-up cover of The Kinks’ “(I’m Not) Like Everybody Else” hit #1 on Rock radio in South America in 2015. Their independently released debut album In The Valley Of Love And Guns from 2013 features five songs co-written with Jon Bon Jovi.

“I’m all about playing a fun song and throwing myself around, that’s Rock ’n’ Roll at its heart,” ZouZou remarks. “But I’m also about telling the stories of resurrection and life and hope and darkness.”

The latest release in Wicked Cool Records’ ongoing partnership with The Orchard as distributor, Dig Your Roots kicks off another busy year for the label, following up the success of 2019 Billboard Heatseekers Top 10 albums by Jesse Malin and The Dollyrots. Both Malin and The Dollyrots are already slated to release new music for the label in 2020, as are Wyldlife, The Empty Hearts, Ryan Hamilton & The Harlequin Ghosts and many more.
