Sam Marks Delivers Lush New Single ‘Tend To Yourself’

Indie Rock Artist

With his compelling, husky vocals and soft spot for reverb-drenched guitars, Sydney-based virtuoso Sam Marks is back with a new single ‘Tend To Yourself’, a lush indie-rock track brimming with groovy reggae influences.

His third single, following the release of well-received summertime tune ‘Eventide’ last November, ‘Tend To Yourself’ sees Marks bring a new depth to his music, adding a flavoursome reggae twist to his familiar blend of upbeat indie-rock.

A rich single charged with soaring guitars and a contagious beat that accentuates Marks’ powerful vocals, ‘Tend To Yourself’ surges with unbridled energy in the song’s second half with a razor-sharp overdriven guitar riff and solo, bringing an exhilarating edge to the track. Like a cooling breeze on a warm day, ‘Tend To Yourself’ is a breath of fresh air, further showcasing Marks’ vocal prowess and willingness to explore multiple influences within his music.

Known for invoking feelings of nostalgia through his music, Marks wrote ‘Tend To Yourself’ whilst reflecting on his time during COVID-19, aiming to remind people about the importance of self-care, stating:

“The title says it all. Tend To Yourself. However that may be. Ironically, this is something I’m not very good at – switching off and relaxing. During covid I was forced to have some down time, as most people were. I learnt about how important it can be.”

No stranger to the Australian music scene, Sam Marks studied classical composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has played in multiple rock bands during the past decade. Since starting his own venture in September with his solo debut single ‘Ellie Mae’, Marks continues to solidify his standing as a respected solo artist with his uniquely crafted brand of nostalgic indie-rock.

Marks’ previous releases have seen support from Triple J Unearthed, Aus Music Scene, The AU Review, AAA Backstage and more.

Single cover

Hey Young Soul’ is the latest single to come from Australian singer songwriter Paul Moleta. Inspired by his time spent in a rehabilitation centre following lower spinal surgeries, ‘Hey Young Soul’ is imbued with positive energy, a real cheery summer tune. Talking about the song himself, Paul Moleta explains…

I wrote the song to remind myself and other Rehabilitators and families that love, persistence and a positive mindset will help us conquer the challenges each day presents us with.

With its upbeat and summery sound, ‘Hey Young Soul’ marches us towards a stranger and happier mindset, a sentiment that has become increasingly important in our daily lives.

Growing up in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, Paul began writing songs at an early age inspired to become a singer-songwriter. Blending alternative pop rock melodies with thoughtful and introspective lyrics,

Paul Moleta has used his music as a driving force to follow his dreams. Paul relocated to Ireland in 2017 where he fulfilled his dream of recording in Windmill Studios where he recorded his recent single ‘Hypnotised’ which has amassed nearly 20,000 streams on Spotify. Whilst living in Ireland he played major Irish festivals such as Electric Picnic, before moving back to Australia to continue pursuing music.

Faded Shades Alternative Rock Release Catchy New Single She Left Yesterday

A heartfelt message of solace regarding a love lost to the allure of travel, ‘She Left Yesterday’ is the new single to come from alternative rockers Faded Shades. A jangle pop guitar riff creates the backbone of the song providing an upbeat melody for the drums and bass to dance along to. ‘She Left Yesterday’ is catchy and instantly recognisable. Drawing influence from the sound of Oasis, Catfish and the Bottlemen and The Who, the three piece pour their influences into their own music.

Describing their first album as a pipe dream recorded in a spare bedroom, this experience pushed Faded Shades onto bigger and better things. Now having finished recording their second album in Big Jelly Studio, they had the luxury of a week’s residency, a very different recording process to their debut. Their name Faded Shades refers to a Small Faces lyric and the concept of getting lost in something.

Female Fronted Rock Queens, High Grass Smashing New Single, Tonight

Emerging partly as a lifeline for one of the band’s members as he climbed out of a dark place, Sotu’s debut album is a reflection of the joy of rediscovering music coupled with the intense journey of recovery and thriving in life after bouncing back from the brink of despair.

The dynamic album explores a range of themes with Eddie Vedder like lead vocals and anthemic guitar lines.

The Australian five piece was initially formed in the 90s, and reformed in 2016 with a new drummer, new name, and a new drive for making music. Drawing influence from SoundGarden and Foo Fighters, they describe their sound as groovy eclectic rock and cruise style with a Grungy Psychedelic grind, occasional slappy bass and lightly sprinkled silliness with the odd mellow floaty ballad.

Sotu produces a charged youthful sound that is tempered by the maturity of the musicians and songwriters.

Get Some Peace Of Mind From The Ghostly Beard

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from the Ghostly Beard and perhaps it’s times like these, in isolation, that inspire us to share, write about and explore what we’re doing and who we are.

It seems there are many of us are feeling vulnerable, lost and question what life is all about and those who come and go, but we all deserve some peace of mind.

Ghostly Beards latest song, ‘Peace Of Mind’ is exactly that. The lyrics reflected by the times in one’s life which don’t seem to be improving, hoping the warmth of the sun shining on your face will make it right.

Artists, singer, songwriters, soul searching to find themselves in normal times just to reach out and find someone who is willing to just listen and Ghostly Beard isn’t alone on this one.

I know in recent studies taken place in Australia, the most vulnerable to low mood and depression are those in the arts industry, and in these horrid times of isolation and quarantine, daily news on the lonely topic of Covid 19, we can’t deny, is having a huge impact on us all.

‘Peace Of Mind’ is a song obviously written from the heart and one in which I take my hat off too. It’s a song of questions and hope in amongst the darkness and a reminder, that we are not alone. Good one Ghost!

‘Peace Of Mind’ is released today 15th April

Female Fronted Rock Queens, High Grass Smashing New Single, Tonight

After forming in Cuba, now based in Los Angeles, alt-rock outfit High Grass write ambitious and frank songs about relationships and day to day life with darker, more introspective undertones. Inspired to empower the next generation, their latest single ‘Tonight’  hopes to motivate people to be true to themselves and to always follow their dreams.

Originally from Moscow, Russia, High Grass’ front woman Kristina Miranda moved to Cuba in 2010, joining forces with Marciel in 2012, where High Grasswas born. With Cuba being an isolated country, with hardly any internet until 2015, there was a time that Rock and Roll music was banned and could only be found in the underground scene. Despite limited resources, High Grass recorded their music in their bedroom’s. Rock is still known in Cuba for its rebel expression, which is why High Grass create music to bring attention to the struggles that people experience living there.

It wasn’t long before they started making quite a name for themselves over in Cuba, collecting nominations for The Best Rock Band of Cuba at the “Cuerda Viva” and performing at Havana World Music Festival (2015). It was in that period that High Grass captured the attention of multi-Grammy producer Jacquire King and talented artist, Christian Paschall (Maren Morris’ drummer) who were the first influential figures in the industry to grasp the potential in the band. Since then, High Grass have collaborated with them on several future releases.

When speaking more on ‘Tonight’, High Grass’ lead vocalist Kristina explained

“We wrote the song “Tonight” back in Cuba in 2012. This song is about finding your path and being true to yourself. It was inspired by my decision to move from Moscow to Havana, where Marciel and I met and started the band. It was hard to leave my family and friends, but this decision has totally changed my life. I have no idea what it would be like if I hadn’t made this choice, and believe it is essential to follow your instincts to find yourself”.

High Grass are currently nearing the official release of their EP, which will contain 5 tracks, written and recorded by the band back in Cuba.

Indie Rockers Gaspar Sanz New Song Inspired by Cheryl the Cat

Indie Rock New Song

Indie Rockers Gaspar Sanz New Song Inspired by Cheryl the Cat

‘Cheryl’ is the first single for 2020 from Sydney indie-rockers Gaspar Sanz. Known for their energy and infectious sense of play, the band’s newest song draws inspiration from an unlikely source.

“This song was inspired by a cat called Cheryl who used to live with Jimmy (singer) and Sammy (drummer). Cheryl was a stray who was living on the roof of our other flatmate’s previous residence and after a period of time, he ended up adopting her. She was very old and had a litany of health issues, but was a beautiful and gentle old soul, who had clearly seen some shit. The meows that are featured in the song are from Cheryl herself. Jimmy followed her around the apartment with a microphone for about half an hour to capture them.”

Despite the simplicity of the song’s namesake, the lyrics delve deeper, exploring the parables between human relationships and those we have with feline companions.

“Cats are extremely complicated and difficult. Loving anyone, in any capacity, is never unconditional or uncomplicated, it requires constant attention and comprise, much like a relationship with a feline.”

‘Cheryl’ was recorded at Golden Retriever Studios in Marrickville with producer Oscar Dawson.

Marcelo Deiss New Indie Rock Blues Single with Horses Running

Icon The Great is Back For More with Tripper Remix

Indie Artist

MARCELØ DEISS is a Brazilian born, London based artist whose music dances between indie, blues, folk and rock. His music details themes about social alienation and human condition in subjects like greed, hypocrisy, absurdity and despair. The South American artist feeds off irony, satire and a dose of dark humor to make audiences see the obvious that goes unnoticed in everyday life. Highlighting situations and news that we see but we don’t look at and news we hear but we don’t listen to, MARCELØ brings light to ordinary occurrences. Everything from the overuse of technology, to economic policy and our daily customs.

Spending time in both London and Sao Paulo, the musician is able to explore new sounds as well as new topics. Influenced greatly by visual artists such as Steve Cutts and John Holcroft, MARCELØ’s songs revolve around the struggling underclass, with anthems about anti-establishment, anti-capitalist and anti-war.

MARCELØ shares, “Cutts and Holcroft’s work embodies a powerful and scary message about humankind which we can all really relate to as human beings. Their work really helped create a clear vision of what I was trying to achieve sonically.”

In his latest work, MARCELØ touches on narratives revolving around the constant struggles and injustice we face in our society and how it is affecting us all. “Horses Running” deals with themes such as greed and social disaffection.

MARCELØ confides, “I think it’s important to discuss topics about our society and the current problems we face together in the modern world. This to me seems more relevant due to the current situation our society is facing right now.”

Knowing that he wanted to write about society and the system we live in, the songwriter was triggered by movements such as Brexit, Trump, Me Too, Black Lives Matter and other topics that deal with oppression. Comparing them to the dystopian worlds in sci-fi books including Brave New World, 1984 and The Year Of The Flood, MARCELØ noticed that these worlds aren’t very far from our own.

“Horses Running” soaks up much of MARCELØ’s love for blues artists including B.B King and Eric Clapton, while simultaneously delivering a fresh and modern indie rock sound. The track features powerful lyrics, distorted, gritty guitars and a determined rhythm section, whilst emanating vintage sounds through the use of analog equipment. The Brazilian artist creates music to stimulate emotions and “Horses Running” is a shining example.

With the hope that his music may spark conversations about subjects that need to be confronted and ultimately lead to answers in the long run, MARCELØ DEISS continues his journey, with the release of “Horses Running”.

Pineo & Loeb Brings Timeless Quality to This Is Your Life

The Sound Of Amongst Liars Are a Loud and Fierce Powerhouse

Indie Duo

This Is Your Life reflects on the past and looks into the future for Alan Frew (lead vocalist/songwriter of the Grammy-nominated rock band Glass Tiger). We combined Alan’s timeless vocal performance with contemporary production to blend rock, electronic + dance elements for a universal flavour.

Alan recorded the vocals alongside Sam Reid on piano + Al Connely on guitar. We then took that into the studio, working with synthesizers + drum machines while also recording saxophone + additional instrumentation. Matt Mays later recorded his parts at Halifax’s Sonic Temple before everything was mixed down at Orange Lounge in Toronto.

The song encapsulates the timeless quality of Glass Tiger’s massive 80’s hits, while also having a sleek + modern production that blends with today’s pop hits. Matt Mays adds an extra edge to help propel “This Is Your Life” that much further, comparable to Bryan Adams’ feature on “Don’t Forget Me When I’m Gone,” Glass Tigers’ 1986 classic

Three generations of Canadian musicians who usually play to very different audiences all came together to coexist musically in a way that anyone can enjoy. “This Is Your Life” encourages you to accept and see the beauty in the current moment. Change is inevitable and the past can never hold you back.

Another Dream, Dark and Impressive Song from Serenade The Stars

Indie Rock Pop Band

SeRENADE THE STARS – ‘DREAM’

Serenade The Stars is one band in which I have had the pleasure to follow and watch, and more importantly listen to and enjoy listening to the entirety of their music.

Quite often when sifting through music, there’s little time to listen to the entirety of a song, and recognising a good ‘thing’, a good or great artist, after 30 secs to a minute in.

This is not the case with Serenade the Stars.

The 5-piece indie pop rock band embrace change and seem to enjoy it while experimenting with their music, which has led to impressive stand-alone tracks.

Their latest song, ‘Dream’, is one that lifts you up as the chorus explodes into an impressive melody, souring through the stars. The production is smooth and grand as it begins with guitar picking and minor instrumentation, lifting into the chorus with well blended BV’s, sustained by a pad of electronic undertones before the wild and free guitar solo shows its stuff in the bridge.

Matthew Harman’s voice is outstanding as his vocals are seamless as he takes this song to another level. That said, the song itself, written by the band, is yet another killer.

As the lyrics resonate so close, to many; I would imagine. The opening verse ‘I wake up to the voice inside of me, and I’m calling out and I can’t even breathe. The coffee cup is tainted, I poured it in so gently wishing that the day would fade away.”

Dark and Mysterious are just a few words describing ‘Dream’, yet relatable to those who have loved and lost, yearning for things to be different; to be good again.

It has a sense of being lost within your own soul; perhaps struggling as life continues to move and shift in way’s no-one can prepare you for.

‘Dream’ is a surprise track from ‘Serenade The Stars’ following their impeccable ‘Reflections’ single which was released in December. You can read the review and hear Reflections here. REFLECTIONS – Serenade The Stars

Tracey gives 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Brain Dead Smooth and Raw Indie Rock New Single from Filmspeed

Indie Rock BandClassic rock with a new-school filter, Filmspeed rushes the ears and minds of all who hear the first few soulful notes of the infectious warning “Brain Dead.”

Punching the bass and drums like the Rolling Stones and the Kinks and pulling no punches lyrically, the single describes both the disconnect caused by media and the desire to rekindle a relationship with something more humane – whatever that be. Combining drummer Oliver Dobrian and bassist Nick Stout’s poppy yet hard, eager yet earnest riffs and rhythm and Craig Broomba’s yearning and rolling vocals, the band members act as alternative superheroes with this jangly call to arms and its brave, bass-y, backbeat. The power of Brain Dead gives raw rock ‘n’ roll and indie smoothness a run for their money in an effort to tame the echoing roar of commercialism with a beat that will get the listener as ready for anarchy as dancing.

The band had the following to say about the brilliant production masterminds behind the single.

“This went straight to analog tape, old-school rock n’ roll style. Minimal overdubs, just vocals and extra percussion, (you know, like sleigh bells and such). Mark at Station House in Echo Park really has that raw, vintage, and BIG sounding gear that feels cool even just hearing the playback. The producer on this track, Jason Hollis, is a true believer in both the rock and the roll. Anytime we get to work with him, we know it’s gonna be chock full of swagger.”

Bold and Brash New Single From London Rockers Flashfires

Indie Band

Having already supported the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Subways and Ash, it’s clear that Flashfires are already making all the right moves.

Able to count the likes of Huw Stephens and Jo Whiley as supporters, the London-based four-piece are turning heads wherever they go.

That however, should come as little surprise to anyone that’s familiar with the band’s razor sharp riffs, funk-fuelled rhythm section and idiosyncratic vocal delivery. With previous single ‘Manshark’ grabbing the attention of the aforementioned Huw Stephens, while establishing Flashfires trademark aesthetic: classic rock aesthetic kicking and screaming in to the contemporary, disregarding any of the pomp with which the genre was once synonymous.

New single ‘Circus Boy’ produced and mixed again at J Street Recorders in Sacramento (California) by Brian Wheat; bassist of US legendary rock band Tesla, sees on such aesthetics. Its crunchy guitars soon joined by a bold bottom end that shows that Flashfires aren’t here to mess about. Verses appear restrained, understated even, lulling listeners in to a false sense of security before its explosive chorus shows just how far Flashfires have come in the short space between releases.

Bold, brash and unafraid to throw their weight about, Flashfires are a band on the brink of blowing up and ‘Circus Boy’ could very easily be the sound of them doing exactly that.

If this single feels like a statement of intent from a band on the cusp of big things, their eponymous EP from which it’s taken feels more like an aphorism, a bold insight into what it means to be a 21st Century rock band. Far from a one trick pony however, Flashfires strikes a delicate balance between self-restraint and unashamed bombast. The likes of the afore mentioned ‘Circus Boy’ or the penultimate ‘Cezanne’ manage to harness the band’s inherent raw power, appealing to fans of both alternative rock while retaining an understated indie edge.

Elsewhere however, the likes of ‘Champagne On Mars’ or final offering ‘Life’s Cruel Line’ provide present a more melodic side to the band, allowing lead singer Alex Gonzato the chance to let his effortless vocals soar all the while showcasing the diversity which lies at the very core of what Flashfires stand for.  (Scruff of the Neck)

Punk Rock Debut Single Deciduous from Chief State

Punk Rock Debut Single Deciduous from Chief State

Indie Punk Rock Band

Vancouver pop-punk five-piece  Chief State  has released the first single off their forthcoming album titled “Tough Love,” which will be released in early 2020.

The song was recorded in Vancouver by Tim Creviston (Spiritbox, Misery Signals, Parting Ways).

Chief State’s guitarist Nik Pang says, “Deciduous is a song about the transition in seasons from summer into fall and winter. As the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, a lot of people, myself included, tend to isolate themselves and get into a really negative headspace. The song uses the metaphor of deciduous and evergreen trees to explain how some really struggle through the colder months, while others remain unchanged. As much as the song is about struggling with seasonal depression, it still keeps a relatively positive outlook, because after all, it never stays cold forever.”

Indie Folk Rockers Union Duke are Back with the Atlas Of Love

Indie Band

The brand new tune from Union Duke, “Atlas Of Love,” is an ode to everyone who feels like a burden in their relationship.

What begins as a mellow, chugging acoustic number soon travels through introspective verses and a sing-along chorus before wrapping up in a wistful blanket of organ and pedal steel.

Produced by Jeff Hazin, “Atlas Of Love” was recorded between his studio and Toronto’s Taurus Recording. The organ and pedal steel is definitely a departure from our previous work, but it still maintains the pieces that make up our trademark sound – catchy melodies, thoughtful lyricism, and powerful vocal harmonies.

Union Duke are More than just bandmates, they are also best friends.

Union Duke

: a raucous collision of alt-rock and twang, bringing crowds to their feet with songs from the heart.

Donaher Power Pop Punk Rock Band Releases Before Anyone Else

Donaher Power Pop Punk Rock Band Releases Before Anyone Else

Power Punk Rock Band

New England power-pop 4-piece Donaher have just released a new single, “Before Anyone Else.”

The track is the first new music from the band since their debut album, 2017’s “I Swear My Love Is True.”

“Before Anyone Else” is an upbeat love-struck fantasy power-ballad that reflects back on new love after having spent a proverbial lifetime together. If you’re into 90’s-era Weezer and the love-lorn melancholy of Smoking Popes, you’re going to want to follow Donaher and add their songs to your bae’s playlist.

Produced by Gary Cioffi (A Will Away, Transit, Bloom) and mastered by Jim Keaney (The Organ Beats, Pansy Division).

Donaher is on tour in the Northeast this fall:

10.24 Brooklyn NY – Sixty Sixth Congress
10.25 Trenton NJ – Mill Hill Basement
10.26 Philadelphia PA – the Grape Room
11.1 Manchester NH – Shaskeen
11.2 Providence RI – Alchemy
