Flashfires – ‘Champagne from Mars’

Flashfires Sprinkle Some Moonshine with Champagne from Mars

Flashfires are the four-piece band from London, who’s turning heads, and it’s easy to hear why.

Their latest single, ‘Champagne from Mars’ has instant appeal as soon as you hit play.

An easy-going understated production that’s somewhat familiar in melody and sound which makes it the kind of track I found myself wanting to hear again. Not bad for me I say.

Upon my first listen, I couldn’t help but draw a comparison to a mix mash of The Beatles on Broadway performing songs from a Chorus Line. Rather a strange concept I know, but this only left me thinking how clever these boys really are.

As the song approaches the chorus and those guitars begin-a-strumming…oh, those guitars….did you hear me say, those guitars; Sweetly produced without over-riding the vocal, is the clean lead guitar echoed all the way from Mars.

The skilful vocals of Alexander Gonzato breezes throughout the song, no sweat, making me feel like a glass of champagne, and I don’t really care if it came from Mars, because this track makes me feel mighty fine just as it is, right here on earth.

The melody shows creative flair for their song writing, as it simply allows the bubbles to keep flowing nicely. Flashfires seemed to have mastered the art of a delicate balance between self-restraint and a grungy swagger sprinkled with moonshine throughout ‘Champagne from Mars’.

Pour me 9 glasses of Champagne from Mars please.

New Indie Rock Music from East Of Zurich Band

EAST OF ZURICH – ‘ROLL OVER’

New Indie Rock Music from East Of Zurich Band

Indie rock is much beloved here in Brisbane, Australia. From Powderfinger and Regurgitator in the 90s, through to Violent Soho and Dune Rats now, this city has a soft spot for guitar-driven (melodic) rock music. So, I predict that the music of East of Zurich should go over well in their hometown and that the band’s latest single, “Roll Over”, should be a hit on 4ZZZ.

Comprising of Martin Brabec, David Simpendorfer, Nick Ng and Anthony Timbrell, East of Zurich’s brand of indie rock harkens back not only to the early 90s, but also to the garage band sounds of 80s Australian acts such as The Stems and Hoodoo Gurus. Indeed, Timbrell states that the lyrics for “Roll Over” were inspired by an idea to make a “rollicking surf song in the spirit of Hoodoo Gurus”.

The track is solid, a kind of medium-paced ballad overlaid with lush organ sounds, rounded off with earthy production values.

Listening to “Roll Over”, you would never guess that East of Zurich have only been playing together for the last 18 months. On the strength of this, one can only imagine how strong their songwriting will be in 18 months from now.

Due for release on 6th March.

Simon says 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Brain Dead Smooth and Raw Indie Rock New Single from Filmspeed

Indie Rock BandClassic rock with a new-school filter, Filmspeed rushes the ears and minds of all who hear the first few soulful notes of the infectious warning “Brain Dead.”

Punching the bass and drums like the Rolling Stones and the Kinks and pulling no punches lyrically, the single describes both the disconnect caused by media and the desire to rekindle a relationship with something more humane – whatever that be. Combining drummer Oliver Dobrian and bassist Nick Stout’s poppy yet hard, eager yet earnest riffs and rhythm and Craig Broomba’s yearning and rolling vocals, the band members act as alternative superheroes with this jangly call to arms and its brave, bass-y, backbeat. The power of Brain Dead gives raw rock ‘n’ roll and indie smoothness a run for their money in an effort to tame the echoing roar of commercialism with a beat that will get the listener as ready for anarchy as dancing.

The band had the following to say about the brilliant production masterminds behind the single.

“This went straight to analog tape, old-school rock n’ roll style. Minimal overdubs, just vocals and extra percussion, (you know, like sleigh bells and such). Mark at Station House in Echo Park really has that raw, vintage, and BIG sounding gear that feels cool even just hearing the playback. The producer on this track, Jason Hollis, is a true believer in both the rock and the roll. Anytime we get to work with him, we know it’s gonna be chock full of swagger.”

Bold and Brash New Single From London Rockers Flashfires

Indie Band

Having already supported the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen, The Subways and Ash, it’s clear that Flashfires are already making all the right moves.

Able to count the likes of Huw Stephens and Jo Whiley as supporters, the London-based four-piece are turning heads wherever they go.

That however, should come as little surprise to anyone that’s familiar with the band’s razor sharp riffs, funk-fuelled rhythm section and idiosyncratic vocal delivery. With previous single ‘Manshark’ grabbing the attention of the aforementioned Huw Stephens, while establishing Flashfires trademark aesthetic: classic rock aesthetic kicking and screaming in to the contemporary, disregarding any of the pomp with which the genre was once synonymous.

New single ‘Circus Boy’ produced and mixed again at J Street Recorders in Sacramento (California) by Brian Wheat; bassist of US legendary rock band Tesla, sees on such aesthetics. Its crunchy guitars soon joined by a bold bottom end that shows that Flashfires aren’t here to mess about. Verses appear restrained, understated even, lulling listeners in to a false sense of security before its explosive chorus shows just how far Flashfires have come in the short space between releases.

Bold, brash and unafraid to throw their weight about, Flashfires are a band on the brink of blowing up and ‘Circus Boy’ could very easily be the sound of them doing exactly that.

If this single feels like a statement of intent from a band on the cusp of big things, their eponymous EP from which it’s taken feels more like an aphorism, a bold insight into what it means to be a 21st Century rock band. Far from a one trick pony however, Flashfires strikes a delicate balance between self-restraint and unashamed bombast. The likes of the afore mentioned ‘Circus Boy’ or the penultimate ‘Cezanne’ manage to harness the band’s inherent raw power, appealing to fans of both alternative rock while retaining an understated indie edge.

Elsewhere however, the likes of ‘Champagne On Mars’ or final offering ‘Life’s Cruel Line’ provide present a more melodic side to the band, allowing lead singer Alex Gonzato the chance to let his effortless vocals soar all the while showcasing the diversity which lies at the very core of what Flashfires stand for.  (Scruff of the Neck)

Exceptional Indie Rock from Singer Songwriter Matthew Tanner

Indie Rock Artist

Vulnerable and utterly mesmerising, Matthew’s raw and relatable lyrics have captivated our ears and hearts since bursting onto the scene back in 2017 with the release of ‘Healing’. Since then, Matthew has garnered thousands of streams across streaming platforms and built on his ever-growing fan base.

The 23-year-old singer-songwriter, originates from a remote town on the west coast of Scotland. Having studied classical music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Matthew began writing and producing his own music from a young age. After leaving RCS, he was soon performing his own material at iconic venues around Glasgow including King Tuts and Buff Club.

When speaking on the track, Matthew stated: This track represents the heaviest I’ve ever gone in terms of production. Listening to other Scottish bands such as Fatherson, I was inspired to make this track as dense as possible within the realms of what a singer-songwriter can do on their own. The song is usually performed live with a band to fairly replicate the energy produced on this record but also works acoustically as despite its high energy still has meaningful lyrics.

Matthew is set to release I Don’t Know on all streaming platforms January 17th.

New Project of Bandaid Brigades Throwback of Sounds

Indie Artist

Bandaid Brigade the musical project of Zach Quinn (PEARS), Brian Wahlstrom (Scorpios, Gods of Mount Olympus) and friends Paul Rucker (Armchair Martian, Street Dogs, Drag The River) and Chris Fogal (The Gamits) will release their debut album ‘I’m Separate’ on January 21, 2020.

Recorded at Black in Bluhm Studios in Denver, CO, and co-produced with Fogal, the album finds the members of Bandaid Brigade stretching beyond their collective punk roots with ambitious songwriting, polished arrangements, and a throwback sound that draws some detectable influences from early progressive rock, a heady mix of Springsteen’s attitude, Elton John’s artistic balladry, and classic pop-rock disco grooves echoing ABBA and Earth Wind & Fire.

Bandaid Brigade says: “It’s quite possible that this is the best album ever made. We hope you like it as much as we think you think we think we do.”

About Bandaid Brigade

Zach Quinn made his name fronting critically acclaimed New Orleans-based hardcore punk band PEARS. Brian Wahlstrom is a classically trained opera singer and pianist whose touring and recording career is rooted firmly in punk rock and has included frequent collaborations with Joey Cape (Lagwagon).

Quinn and Wahlstrom connected on a tour produced by Cape’s label One Week Records, which brings artists into a high energy, week long write-arrange-record process that culminates in a completed album and follow-up touring. The pairing fully leverages the combination of Quinn’s raw edge, Wahlstrom’s finesse, and the lyrical power of dual songwriters.

Dreampop Shoegaze New Music from Europe’s Pia Fraus

The Dead Daisies releases New Single Righteous Days

Indie Artist

A flagship of East European the dreampop-shoegaze scene, Pia Fraus has announced their new album ‘Empty Parks’, slated for release on January 20, 2020. Ahead of that, they present the single ‘Love Sports’. This follows up their most recent singles for ‘Hidden Parks’ and ‘Sweet Sunday Snow’, complete with remixes.

Pia Fraus is made up of Eve Komp, Kärt Ojavee, Rein Fuks, Reijo Tagapere and Joosep Volk. Formed in 1998 between six art school students, Pia Fras have released five studio albums and a handful of EPs on various record labels. They boast a sublime mixture of dreampop, subtle shoegaze and beautiful electronica, blissfully topped off with shimmering layered male-female vocals in tandem.

Produced and mixed by John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake, Stereolab, Broken Social Scene, Teenage Fanclub) at Soma Electronic Music Studios in Nevada City, California, and mastered by 21 time Estonian Music Award winner Lauri Liivak, ´Empty Parks´ was recorded in two separate kitchens and a windowless basement, as well as bassist Reijo Tagapere’s barn.

“This is the poppiest album we’ve ever made. It’s melancholy and happy at the same time – definitely happier than our latest ‘Field Ceremony’ album. To work with John McEntire was my teenage wet dream.  I have been a massive fan of John’s work over the years, and I never thought that one day I have a chance to sit next to this guy and make my own record. Of course, it was quite challenging and stressful for me,” says frontman Rein Fuks.

“Although the process of making this album wasn’t been the easiest, I associate this album relates mostly with the feeling of happiness and positivism. The awareness of being able to be hopeful and make jokes about life even if everything seems to going downhill,” says vocalist Eve Komp.

The band’s most recent album ‘Field Ceremony’ was released n 2018 by Shelflife Records (USA), Vinyl Junkie Recordings (Japan), and their own imprint Seksound (EU). Some highlights of the 21 years since the band formed include working with Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake, who produced their 2008 album ‘After Summer’, and the 7″ vinyl split single ‘Mute The Birds / Ships Will Sail’ with Ulrich Schnauss.

Pia Fraus has shared the stage with such artists as Ulrich Schnauss, Animal Collective, Spinning Coin, Jane Weaver and Mark Peters (Engineers). They have toured Japan, China, Taiwan, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Poland, Latvia and Finland.

Their music has been remixed by a vast array of recognized artists, including Vanishing Twin, His Name Is Alive, Teenage Fanclub, Ulrich Schnauss, Hood, Mark Peters, Airiel, Mahogany, Lightships, Picnic, Wolfredt, Jatun, Bill Wells, Guther, Miwon, Fleckfumie, Mondii, Future Pilot Aka, Seeland, International Airport, Galaktlan, and Pastacas.

Drummer Joosep Volk adds, “Personally, Empty Parks means a lot. It’s sort of a homecoming to me. 16 years has past since I last played with the rest of the group and when Rein asked me to return, I never thought twice. Understanding that sometimes things do fall apart and you just have to pick yourself up and deal with it. Life is deviously clever, we just have to endure.”

The ‘Empty Parks’ LP released on January 20 by Seksound (worldwide) and on Vinyl Junkie in Japan. The album will be distributed by Darla Records in the USA. It will be available on limited Orange Vinyl (200 hand-numbered and signed copies), Black Vinyl (500 hand-numbered and signed copies), and limited Compact Disc (500 hand-numbered and signed copies). It willalso  be available digitally everywhere, including Spotify. It can be pre-ordered directly from the artist via Bandcamp.

Also in January, Pia Fraus will be playing a series of live concerts in Europe and Japan, where they will be playing several dates with peers Ringo Deathstarr and Bertoia.

New Album of Rhythmic Dark Electronic from Dispel

The Dead Daisies releases New Single Righteous Days

Indie Band

Dark electronic collective Dispel are previewing their new single ‘Temptation’ via a new video representing the ‘Last Trial’ stage of the Hero’s Journey. The video features a return of the Crusading Knight ‘Levie.’ Having quested and gained the ‘Sword of Knowledge’ in the ‘Modal Consequence’ music video, he must now be tested to prove worthy of this new power and strength.

Like the previous single ‘Modal Consequence’, this new track features hearty front-and-center mezzo-soprano vocals by Ravensea against the background of glacial industrial rhythms. Both tracks offer a taste of their album ‘Lore’.

Dispel’s sound is laced with dark electronic melodies, vocal hooks and praising spiritual quests through driving beats and oscillating keyboards. Together, they seek to create a musical narrative praising historic lore, mythology and mysticism.

This album was produced by Mike Textbeak, a Cleopatra Records artist (as TEXTBEAK) and early DJ from the Witchhouse scene. He has worked with an impressive line-up including legendary producer John Fryer, Mark Stewart, Bestial Mouths, Peter Hope, Cyanotic, Vaselyne and Searmanas, to name but a few. An expert in underground music, he hosts the weekly CXB7 radio show on Hexx 9 Radio.

Comprised of nine tracks, this album was mastered at The Cage Studios in Coventry, UK by Martin Bowes of Attrition, well known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, Psychic TV and Steven Severin of Siouxsie & the Banshees.

Dispel is comprised of Scott Dispel, Ravensea and Sean Gallows. Scott Dispel was a founding member of the old school hardcore band Face Value and is also currently the drummer for TEXTBEAK. A studio engineer and producer, in 2005, he was voted Cleveland’s best nightclub DJ by Scene Magazine.

Scott Dispel speaks about the new video: “Is he a true Hero? Or will his new found power corrupt and tempt him to become a tyrant. Too many leaders throughout history have succumbed to the temptation to abuse their power, often to the detriment of their subjects. In fact, the 20th century was rife with despots. However, collectively we continue to endure and strive for far better…”

“We hope to inspire others to take the first step to “attacking their destiny” to becoming the best versions of themselves and in having the courage to strive for achievement, despite the unknown challenges that will surely arise”.

Dispel has unlikely roots in the early 90’s hardcore punk scene while Scott Dispel. While on tour with Face Value, a seed was planted in an underground goth-Industrial club in Berlin. Exposed to a new sound and different culture, this experience made a lasting impression. Though the raw truth of the punk scene remained, it was clear that electronic music was the next chapter and that this required a fresh approach.

Dispel’s music is also inspired by such artists as Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Clan of Xymox, Depeche Mode, VNV Nation and Blutengle on the one hand and Delerium, The Misfits and The Cramps on the other.

After completing a degree in music and recording studio internship, Dispel’s commitment to the art of music was solidified. Feeling the local underground scene was sorely lacking and inspired by Fantasy gaming, mythology and mysticism, the foundation was set. Fate again intervened when he met Ravensea, a Berklee Vocal Performance / Music Therapy major with a powerful voice and insight into music’s transcendence of language and cultural barriers.

Both Dispel videos were directed, filmed and edited by Rafeeq Roberts. Scott Dispel fills the role of the Plague Doctor. Ravensea appears as herself. Jennifer Haney plays the Vampire Queen, as well as handling make-up and wardrobe. Levie Mckenzie plays the Crusading Knight and Morgan Irvine plays the Vampire King.

The full ‘Lore’ LP will be released today, January 10 and will be available on vinyl, CD and digital download. It can be pre-ordered via the artist’s website. The ‘Modal Consequence’ single is currently offered as a free download via Bandcamp .

Indie Emo Band Pointless Releases New Single Half Empty

Indie Emo Band Pointless Releases New Single Half Empty

Indie Rock Band

Pointless is a 4 piece indie/emo band from Gloucester and Camden counties, NJ. Since 2017, the band has released two EPs, Dust (2017), Glow (2018), as well as two singles, “No Chances” (2019), and their newest release “Half Empty” which is streaming everywhere.

All music written by Pointless has been engineered and produced by Nik Bruzzese (Man Overboard) Ace Enders (The Early November) and Dom Maggi (1313) at The Lumberyard Recording, in Hammonton, NJ.

Along with the new release, Pointless currently has four music videos, all shot and engineered by Kurt Fowles of Sirius Cinema and Sirius Coffee Co.

“We have been growing and maturing as a band the same way we do in life every day. Every day we wake up, we try to be better than who we were yesterday. Whether we’re better or not, the effort is definitely there. This is our favorite track we’ve done so far and think it’s our best. We’re very excited to share it with everyone and the writing continues. We’ve been asked what this song means. Though there is definitely a specific meaning to it, it is open-ended to everyone who listens to it. After it becomes its own entity, I don’t think it has one sole meaning. But what I will say is that we just want to be there for people the same way music was there for us.”Justin Monturano (Guitar/ Vocals)

Morning Bells to release debut ‘Fall From The Velvet Sky’ EP

Morning Bells To Release Debut ‘Fall From The Velvet Sky’ EP

Indie Band

Morning Bells is a five-piece comprised of Bryan Fransman (drums, percussion, vocals), Ric Denton (vocals), Emory Ball (guitars, percussion), Laura Weislo (fretted and fretless basses, vocals, synthesizer), and Peele Wimberley (keyboards, vocals, percussion, guitars).

The music and sonic aesthetic found on this EP are influenced by Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Television, Yo La Tengo, The Gun Club, David Sylvian, Tori Amos and Talk Talk.

“We’re all very proud of this release but, for some of us, it’s our first ever release of a creative effort like this. That’s beyond words in many ways. Being able to say “We made a record” feels like the most impossible dream coming true. We chose these five songs because we think they’re some of our best work, we feel they tell great stories, and that they’re a great snapshot of the full range of emotion and musicianship within all of us as a band,” says Ric Denton.

“The music is a collaborative effort that is often created to fit the mood of the lyrics although, sometimes, the songs have started with the music coming first in a random moment of free-flow during practice, so we seize on it because we know it’s meant to become a song, and the words are born after. The lyrics, however, are all very personal. Every song has been inspired by actual events or people, so you’re hearing stories of a life and how it’s unfolded. To write anything less honest would be obvious to the listener, and we couldn’t be inspired as artists.”

Morning Bells formed when drummer Bryan Fransman returned to music, approaching his long-time friend Ric Denton about singing with him. They were soon joined by Laura Weislo, who had played in bands in college, but stopped when it stopped being fun. Having known Ric since college, it was destined to be…

Emory Ball had also been Laura’s bandmate in several bands, including Bellbats, having recorded with the great Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Ben Folds Five, Pylon, Helium, Pavement, Suzanne Vega, Game Theory, Ken Stringfellow) … The deal was sealed and they had their full lineup.

The four were eventually joined by Peele Wimberley. Formerly a drummer in several other bands (The Veldt, The Connells and Bellbats). Having recently returned from a lengthy stint in Los Angeles, he was wooed by the opportunity to try his hand at keyboards and as a recordist.

As of December 13, ‘Fall From The Velvet Sky’ will be available on CD. The album is already available across digital stores such as iTunes and streaming platforms such as Spotify. It can also be ordered via Bandcamp.

Penny Betts release Smooth Energetic Indie-Pop EP

Penny Betts Release Smooth Energetic Indie-Pop EP

Indie Band

The UK’s own Penny Betts offer up a uniquely smooth blend of indie-pop and sixties-style songwriting with their latest and self-titled EP. A four-piece who know precisely who they are and how they want to sound, Penny Betts are inspired by bands stretching as far back as Cream and Pink Floyd as much as modern influences like The Arctic Monkeys and Tame Impala. Their heartfelt songwriting and hypnotic melodies pour through amidst reverb-soaked indie-rock soundscapes, creating something that’s perfectly calming or decidedly energizing – depending on what you need from it; and how loud you let it play.
Beach-side vibes meet with classic UK tones and an anthem-like approach to songwriting. The band have honed their style and sound over time, with lead singer Matt Felix and guitarist Al Finch first jamming together way back during their school years. Over time, bassist Lufta and drummer Jocelyn completed the arrangement and kicked off a whole new chapter for the band. Rock and roll has returned, the genre and the original flair of the 60s and 70s is alive and well. With a touch of originality and a willingness to storm through language barriers – thanks to Matt Felix’ French native tongue – Penny Betts are well on their way to carving out a path of their own.
Passion and musical precision meet under the blanket of sweeping guitars and experimental waves of audio warmth. Penny Betts aim to get you dancing, connecting, and embracing the live music scene as the rightful escapism it was always meant to be. A band well worth looking out for over the coming months and years.
