Indie Pop Artist Zoe Sky Jordan Releases New Music

One of Brisbane’s favourite folk singer-songwritersJordan Merrick, has not slowed down since the release of his debut album ‘Night Music’ (released October 2019) and with his new single ‘Millennial Blues’, he is returning to his roots.

In Merrick’s debut album, he explored a new sound from that of his previous two EP’s (released in 2017). Venturing through blues, folk, rock, country and elements of vaudeville, this studio project involved big arrangements comprised of layers of instruments.

Together, Merrick’s debut album and previous EP’s have seen support from Triple JDouble JABC RadioRAGEMTV AustraliatheMusicPile RatsAU ReviewRhythms Mag and community radio where he has landed in the AMRAP charts a number of times.

Now, for ‘Millennial Blues’, Merrick has returned to his humble sound made simply with his poetic lyrics and an acoustic guitar. Merrick creates a settling and peaceful mood with his feathery touch on the guitar and his distinct Australiana vocal tone. Despite the lyrics contemporary message, Merrick’s sound opens a doorway to a distant, simpler time.

Jordan Merrick describes the meaning behind ‘Millennial Blues’:

“‘Millennial Blues’ chronicles the world my generation was born into – the social media age where we’re constantly surrounded by the pressure of appearance and image. We’re a generation amassing stupendous debt to get qualifications to one day pay off said debt.”

Jordan Merrick was to perform on the 18th of April at Brisbane’s Junk Bar alongside JB Paterson, Ruby Gilbert and Lisa De Angeis. (postponed due to Covid 19 pandemic)

Indie Folk Rockers Union Duke are Back with the Atlas Of Love

Indie Band

The brand new tune from Union Duke, “Atlas Of Love,” is an ode to everyone who feels like a burden in their relationship.

What begins as a mellow, chugging acoustic number soon travels through introspective verses and a sing-along chorus before wrapping up in a wistful blanket of organ and pedal steel.

Produced by Jeff Hazin, “Atlas Of Love” was recorded between his studio and Toronto’s Taurus Recording. The organ and pedal steel is definitely a departure from our previous work, but it still maintains the pieces that make up our trademark sound – catchy melodies, thoughtful lyricism, and powerful vocal harmonies.

Union Duke are More than just bandmates, they are also best friends.

Union Duke

: a raucous collision of alt-rock and twang, bringing crowds to their feet with songs from the heart.

Impressive Debut Single from Folk Pop Band The Pairs

Impressive Debut Single from Folk Pop Band The Pairs

Indie Folk Band

The Pairs are a folk pop group powered by 3 classically trained vocalists and a former punk rock drummer from London, Ontario.

The Pairs are a 3 part-harmony, 1 and 1/2 pairs of twins, and friends from birth, this classically-trained band have released their first single, ‘Did I’ from their debut album, Noise, due out 15th November.

Upon listening to The Pairs, you’ll find an energetic lift take over with a sense of familiarity yet refreshing sound for today’s modern day music.

‘Did I’ clearly shows the professionalism and quality this band posses, drawing a comparison to the likes of the famous three sister act, The Corrs, and a very bright future ahead for The Pairs!

‘Did I’ is about Building authentic, strong and healthy relationships with other people is perhaps one of the most complex things to navigate as humans.

It’s an anthem that emerged from the tense and sometimes self loathing feelings that often follow disagreements.

“”Did I” aims to tell the story of letting go of blame and trying to look inward to find peace and comradery. The track switches between angst and ease as it articulates both the tension and sweetness that comes from living in tandem with others.”

“The Pairs album, Noise, is a collection of songs written from a place of hope, hilarity, tragedy and questioning. It seeks to engage with the often chaotic experience of human life — whether it’s the noise of the world around us, the internal noise we try to make sense of, or simply the noise we can’t help but make as we fumble our way through our own beautiful journey.”- The Pairs

The Pairs band members are: Hillary Watson, Noelle Coughlin, Renée Coughlin, Steve Plimmer

Stephen Day Debut Album Guess Im Grown Exudes Universal Quality

IStephen Day Debut Album Guess Im Grown Exudes Universal Quality

Indie Artist Stephen Day

” Guess I’m Grown Now  feels like the only record I could have possibly made at this time in my life,”  Stephen Day  explains.

“Somehow all of the things I felt limited by at the beginning of making this album made it a perfect time stamp on my life, which is, I guess, how things work? As a person who doesn’t necessarily love to talk about feelings all the time, this record holds a lot of them for me— sadness, extreme joy, FOMO, letting go, starting over, etc. My biggest hope for anyone who listens through this whole album is that they let themselves feel every feeling it holds.”

The Nashville-based singer-songwriter released his debut, full-length record in a premiere with Popdust on Friday. Paring sparkling Jack Antonoff-esque production styles with expert jazz musicianship, Day encapsulates an anthology of early adulthood experiences that give the album an intimate-yet-universal quality. The sound marks a step away from his previous acoustically driven material, while still retaining his signature soulful tenor.

With his last few singles and debut 2016 EP,  Undergrad Romance and the Moses In Me , Day landed on Spotify’s Global Viral Chart and racked up over 13 million streams on the platform alone. The buzz earned him a slot in Nashville’s Live On The Green festival last month, alongside St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Grace Potter, and Steve Earl, among others. The new record sees him touring with The Brook & The Bluff this fall.

Impressive Sleek Fusion of Folk/Pop New Music From Raynes

Impressive Sleek Fusion of Folk/Pop New Music From Raynes

Pop Folk Trio

Raynes is a transatlantic trio made up of two Americans and a Brit. Now based in Los Angeles, Mat Charley and Joe Berger, both born and raised in North Dakota, met UK native Mark Race through Instagram after an extensive search for the final piece of this project. The geographically unlikely three combine their unique and complementary strengths to form an artistically authentic band, integrating elements of modern pop with classically Americana instrumentation. Their ability to blend pianos and synths, pounding drums and sophisticated vocals, and string arrangements with acoustic guitars and mandolins results in an impactful, one-of-a-kind style.

Raynes’ highly anticipated debut single ‘Lemon Drop’ showcases their distinct amalgamation of influences. Produced by Mighty Mike (Lana Del Rey, The Neighbourhood, Dua Lipa) and mastered by Joe LaPorta (David Bowie, Vampire Weekend, Shawn Mendes), the track features catchy melodies, violin riffs, and stacked vocal harmonies. Raynes share:

“It’s been a fun challenge incorporating all of Mike’s pop expertise into our sound. We’ve had a blast figuring out how to make a violin sound like a synth and a snare sound like a hand clap, as well as blending it all together so it walks the line between folk and pop in the most appealing way.” ‘Lemon Drop’ describes chasing fame in Los Angeles and the tension between the sweet and the sour that comes with that. The trio confide, “It’s pretty fatalistic, but very tongue in cheek, as none of us are really planning on getting hooked on drugs or the adoration of fans or any of the other pitfalls that our parents and Hollywood itself warned us about.”

Sonically, the music is inspired by a myriad of different influences. Their sound has been compared to the arena-filling choruses of Coldplay, the Americana instrumentation of Mumford and Sons, and the harmonic complexity of the Beach Boys. Raynes call this inimitable fusion “expensive folk”––folk instrumentation which incorporates very obvious elements of pop production, ultimately creating a slicker and shinier sound than straight-down-the-middle folk. “Even with all of the more exotic or unusual components, it’s really just pop music at its core,” reveals the band.

There are recurring lyrical motifs running through the music of Raynes––heads and hearts, blood and bones, sugar and salt, sun and rain, and wine and water, among many others. There are also a number of musical ideas and elements that repeat in many of their songs, such as atmospheric synth tones, violin and mandolin counterpoints, and world-inspired percussion. But there’s not really one thematic throughline other than “the human condition” and all that comes with it––longing, confusion, cowardice and despair, but also joy, hope, growth, and of course love. Some songs are inspired by Bible stories, Greek myths, or historical events, and some are more personal, direct, and intimate.

With a catalog of songs, ready to unveil one by one, Raynes continues to grace audiences with their robust folky foot-stompers, introspective ballads, and pure pop sugar. ‘Lemon Drop’ is currently available worldwide.
