Foreign Technology Album Full Of Big Beat Gems

Foreign Technology – Blue

It’s hard not to show a bit of favoritism when it comes to music from my hometown. And it’s not hard to justify – Brisbane has a rich musical heritage dating back to The Saints. There might just be something in the air, but there is something about the place that makes it fertile ground for music from a range of genres.

“Blue” is the first full-length album from Brisbane’s own Foreign Technology and it is another solid offering from the river city. A departure from his earlier Gary Numan inspired work, Blue sees Foreign Technology (aka Stephen Donohue) step into the world of big beat, plunging the listener into a sonic landscape that bears similarities to early Chemical Brothers. The opening track, “Beat-Ten” is a statement of intent – a mix of break beats and distorted bass lines that is designed to get the listener moving. The following seven tracks change up the pace, but the focus is always on big dance grooves. For me the standouts include the opening track, the acid-line catchiness of “Deeper” and the electro stylings of “Uprockt”.

Released on May 14 through Pink Dolphin Music, this is a superb album, full of big beat gems. Like I said, as a fellow Brisbanite, I might just be a little biased, but what can I do? I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this and I would highly recommend you take the time to do the same. I am not going to give my usual score out of five for this – rather…

ENILSounds – The Eagle – Instrumental and Vocal Versions

This is a bit of a different review for me – I am actually reviewing two songs that are one. Hailing from Denmark, ENILSounds released her most recent track – The Eagle (Instrumental) on April 30. The instrumental, however, is a stripped back version of the original track, which was released in March. My words here speak to both – two tracks that are equally beautiful and indicative of a talent that has only improved over the years.

ENILSounds’ music is best described as a “soft electronica” – a mix of ambience, new age sounds, moving piano work and touches of synthesized sounds. Her gentle approach to production is best heard in the more recent instrumental version, where sounds appear and disappear, and where melancholy piano chords hint at a longing that may just be beyond reach. The earlier version takes this and adds a vocal performance that is simultaneously fragile and assured. It takes the track to new heights – demonstrating first class song-writing skills from an artist who has created a sound that is truly unique.

I would strongly recommend listening to these two tracks – perhaps starting with the instrumental before moving on to the vocal version. In this way, you will truly come to appreciate the craft on display. The Eagle (Instrumental) and The Eagle demonstrate why ENILSounds is an artist to watch out for.

Simon says 4.5 stars out of 5 for the instrumental and 5 out of 5 stars for the vocal version.

Franz Kirmann and Roberto Grosso – Songe (from the In Waves EP)

Some music just needs to be heard. Some music is just so beautifully crafted that it would seem wrong for it not to reach the listeners that it so richly deserves. “Songe”, from the “In Waves” EP by French producer Franz Kirmann and Italian artist Roberto Grosso, is one such piece of music.

The track begins with a lush, ambient synth pad before adding a drum pulse and a simple melodic loop. Over the top of this is added a guitar figure that helps propel and develop the track. The addition of a bass and percussion towards the end of the track only serves to add additional layers of beauty to what is a carefully crafted song. The overall sound is grainy yet clear – cinematic yet personal. The overall impression is haunting yet peaceful.

I think I was wise to listen to this through headphones, as this is music that is made for repeated close listens. I highly recommend this track to anyone interested in music that gives more to its listeners than does the standard fare on radios around the world. “Songe” is the closing track of the “In Waves” EP and is out now through Days of Being Wild. Take some time to immerse yourself in its sounds – this is music that needs to be heard.

Lalalow Sensory Deprivation Will Transport You Back

Lalalow

Lalalow – Sensory Deprivation

In the nineties, I spent a lot of time listening to female-fronted electronic acts such as Lamb, Single Gun Theory and Everything But The Girl – acts whose music was characterized by lush synths, fractured beats and ethereal vocals. I took comfort in the way these acts could produce sounds and songs that seemed to wash over me, allowing me to float away.

I was transported back to those times and those sounds when I listened to “Sensory Deprivation” by Lalalow. The Finnish electronic pop duo, consisting of Nina Jackson on vocals and keys and Tommy Laivamaa on guitar and bass have produced a hypnotic piece of chilled, downtempo pop here. The production is sparse and centers on lush synth pads, minimal drums and a bass phrase that serves to add momentum. Over the top of this sits Jackson’s vocals – whispered in places and haunting – reinforcing the themes of isolation and disconnection from reality that tie the lyrics together.

Like so many tracks recently, I am a little bit late to the party on this one. Released in February, chances are that you may have come across it already. However, if you haven’t, take some time to check it out. Lalalow has delivered something quiet special with “Sensory Deprivation” and you will be richly rewarded if you give it a listen.

Neonian Vaxxor EP Demonstrates A Solid Slice Of Electronic Music

Vaxxor

Neonian – Vaxxor

It’s been a long while since I last wrote a review for Music Talks and it is a pleasure to be back. I want to kick off 2021 with a review of the Vaxxor EP from UK-based producer Neonian (aka Ian Sawyer). Hailing from Bath, England, Neonian cites his influences as New Order, Chemical Brothers and Orbital, amongst others, and it most certainly shows. I would add to the list 808 State, as the influence of that seminal act looms large here.

The title track kicks things off and I was immediately taken to a happy place.  Early 90s raves were a formative musical experience for me and the sounds on offer here – break beats, loops and bright synths – transported me back in time.  The following track begins with a colder, trance feel, but the housebreaks, samples and synths make another showing. Track three – Hypnic Jerk – dials back the pace, but the early 90s vibe keeps on. The closing track, Proof To Tower keeps the pace slow, but adds mysterious swirling synths to balance the fat bass tones and rapid-fire percussion that links Neonian’s sounds to more recent musical developments.

Released through WEATNU Records, this is a solid slice of electronic music, demonstrating a nice variety of grooves and ideas.  As a fan of 90s electronic music, this EP is right up my alley. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The Brothers Burn Cheesy Electro-Pop are Happy To Be Here

The Brothers Burn – Happy To Be Here

Some music defies categorization. The easy genre labels that apply to so much of the music that seems to pollute the mainstream nowadays just doesn’t apply to a select few. This is particularly true of Texas-based group, The Brothers Burn.

Making music that is best described as a blend of They Might Be Giants, early Art Of Noise, The B-52s and Seinfeld incidental music, The Brothers Burn produce a sound that is all their own. This is particularly true of their latest release, “Happy To Be Here”.

The album kicks off with the catchy electro-pop of “Let’s Go Party With Corrine”, which describes the charms of a girl who “has all the best clothes” and “a box of Legos”, before moving on to describing the events of “March 2020”, when “Twitter blew up coronavirus”. The album continues with shades of reggae and flashbacks to (cheesy) 80s pop.

There’s an innocence to this album but also a knowing irony. Despite its seeming simplicity, the music is a well-spring of references that allows for multiple listens. Just like the aforementioned TMBG, The Brothers Burn offer up what seems on the surface a collection of disposable pop, but that is simultaneously a salute to any thinking listener.

And the best thing here is that you don’t have to wait. Released on July 24 and clocking in at just under 18 minutes, “Happy To Be Here” is ready for your listening pleasure now.

Think Good Audio – Black Lives Matter

It is no secret that Think Good Audio is one of my favorite artists. Working in the area of fractured, downtempo, instrumental hip-hop, Think Good Audio consistently produces music that challenges his listeners to both think and expand their musical horizons. His latest album, “Black Lives Matter”, is absolutely no exception to this.

With track titles such as “I Can’t Breathe”, “George Floyd”, “Oppression” and “Giuliani’s Last Stand”, it should be clear what this album is about. But just in cases it is not, it’s worth quoting the artist himself here:

“This album addresses the many shades of police and racial supremacy that continues to push an ugly history of America into its own oblivion amongst a pandemic that knows no prejudice.

This album is dedicated to the many lives of black Americans killed unjustly; through slavery, segregation, and systemic racism.

I grew up dealing with racism on a personal level. This is an album of significant importance. To still witness minorities dying on TV and cops being protected, sends a message to a person of color like me that my life has no worth in America.”

The sonic palette on display here is startling. Wistful piano loops and chilled hip-hop beats meet vocal samples from TV news. Fractured industrial sounds are juxtaposed against vocal choirs and Maggot Brain-style guitar solos fade in and out of a number of tracks. It is challenging listening at times but it is also reflective of the fractious, partisan times we are currently living in.

For me, the standout tracks were “I Can’t Breathe” where the subtle piano loops and lush orchestral sounds are abruptly silenced by a lingering gunshot, and the musical painting of the experience of oppression on display in the song of the same name.

I normally wrap up my reviews with a rating out of five, but rather than do that, I will instead end with this…

All Atomic Compelling Cinematic Electronic EP – Sirens Of The Suns

All Atomic – Sirens of the Sun (EP)

I am not usually prone to making sweeping generalisations, but I think it is fair to say that the best music is made by those artists most keenly aware of its historical development and their place within it. This is true of all genres, including electronic music. That is why I found the new Sirens of the Sun EP from English producer, All Atomic, so compelling.

It is obvious listening to the four tracks on offer here that All Atomic is steeped in electronic music history. He combines the driving bass arpeggios first introduced to the disco scene by Giorgio Moroder with the synth sounds and phrasing of early Jean-Michel Jarre, along with an eighties synthpop sensibility and the driving beats of more recent years to inform his own sound. What is most impressive is that, whilst these elements are recognised, the end result is a sound that is more than the sum of its parts – a sound that is distinctive and fresh.

Holding all four tracks together on this EP is an underlying tension that All Atomic achieves through the use of repeated, looped arpeggio lines and cinematic flourishes. This is most evident in the first two tracks, Coda and Sequence. The last two tracks, Sirens of the Sun and A Dove 4 Love, add fat, eighties bass sounds that serve to cut through the tension to some extent. Nevertheless, their addition never serves to undercut the dark overall tone of the EP. I particularly liked the rock drum samples on the opening track and the sweeping synth sounds at the start of the title track and my favorite track overall was Sequence.

All Atomic is to be commended for constructing such a thematically consistent EP. He should also be congratulated on his obvious understanding of how the genre has developed historically. His grasp of this has served him very well indeed here.

11:11 Invasion Album Serves Up a Serious Feast Of Styles and Sounds

Electronic Compilation Album

Electronic Alliance Records – 11:11 Invasion (Compilation Album)

What a great time to be a fan of electronic music! For the second week in a row, I get to review an album that highlights just how strong the world of independent electronica is right now. Following in the history of genre team-up collections such as the rap-meets-rock of the Judgment Night soundtrack and the metal-meets-electronica of the Spawn soundtrack, 11:11 Invasion couples 11 electronic music artists with a diverse range of rappers. The resulting album is best described as excellent.

Starting with the 1920s jazz club chorus and drum and bass switch up of “A Blessing and a Curse” by Davey Hub featuring Fat Pockets and Skyline Tigers, through to the acid-house workout of “Warehouse Party” by Gribbles, 11:11 Invasion serves up a feast of styles and sounds that is sure to please listeners. For me, there were three standouts. “Tribe” by Skaarl is a big bass house number featuring the Dizzee Rascal-style rap of Reminiss. “Light Trails” features the sing-song rapping of Bonnie Legion over the top of a minimalist snare and synth groove. And “Pikes Peak” by ØLSKXX (featuring Cee Reed) brought to mind the dense production of cLOUDDEAD and the lyrical flow of Atmosphere.

That is not to suggest those are the only strong tracks on offer here. I could have also mentioned the RZA meets John Carpenter production on “Better Place” by DZM (featuring Helstrip) or the straight up boom-bap of “Oldsckool S.A.N” by Cylotron (Featuring Donte Pringle), but there’s only a certain amount of words I have to play with.

Electronic Alliance Records are to be commended for this experiment. The sheer quality and range on display here should make this a must-listen for all fans of electronic music and hip-hop. So, for the second week in a row…

Triplicate Records – Red Shift (Compilation Album)

I am a big fan of compilation albums. Some music purist friends of mine find that disturbing – a kind of musical sin, so to speak – but I have always found them a great way of discovering new artists and new styles, From the yearly collections of chart hits when I was a child, through to the Ninja Tune and Dope on Plastic samplers of the 90s, onto to my recent purchases of Northern Soul compendiums, compilation albums have always been a part of my musical diet.

The Red Shift compilation from Triplicate Records is a very worthy addition to this diet. Featuring tracks from some of the most interesting artists in the field of electronic music today (including Crest of the Syndicate, Suncastle, Station Zero, Leaving Richmond, Mood Exhibit and Belial Pelegrim amongst others), Red Shift represents a collection of tunes that fall at the more “experimental” or “intelligent” end of that broad genre’s spectrum. The styles and sounds on display here are diverse indeed, but what holds them together is a sense of inventiveness and sonic exploration. Each and every one of the tracks is pushing at the limits of their chosen sub-genres and asking the listener to go beyond their comfort zones.

Whilst it is hard to pick favorites, there were two standout tracks for me. “Index” by Richard Alfaro is an exercise in slow building psychedelica, as various glitched and deformed synth elements are added to build a kind of demented merry-go-round sound. “Fume Jazz” by Dark Fidelity HiFi was another standout – lush synth pads and delayed trumpet sounds float over the top of a subtle drum and bass workout to create a chilled and atmospheric listening space.

Whilst not every track will appeal to every listener, there is a great deal to recommend this album. Most importantly, it will introduce the uninitiated to the wealth of sounds that is to be found in the world of independent electronic music – music that will take them out of their safe spaces. And for those who are familiar, Red Shift is a rewarding listen consisting of some of the best and brightest working in electronic music today.

Stick Up Boys – Lockdown Baby (James Black’s Nice With Ice Remix)

Vibe On This While in Lockdown Baby with Stick Up Boys

As soon as that old school piano track joined the beat, I was sold. The latest track from the Stick Up Boys, “Lockdown Baby” (due for release on July 14), immediately put me in a happy place – taking me back to a time in the early nineties when I was hell of a lot younger and most certainly more carefree.

Heralding from Brighton, UK, the Stick Up Boys is an anonymous music collective working in a range of electronic pop music styles. First releasing music in 2015, the group has recently set up their own label, “Stick Up Music”.

The vibe on this, their latest release, is upbeat – this is house music that not only harkens back to the early days of the genre, but that is also of the moment. “Be my lockdown baby” is not a refrain we would have heard in the pre-Covid 19 world. A wonderful deep bass underpins an infectious groove and light melodic flourishes round out the track for a pleasurable listening experience. This is happy music designed for not so happy times.

I enjoyed “Lockdown Baby” by the Stick Up Kids. I can see me giving it a spin again in the not too distant future when I need to forget the worries of the world and put a smile on my face.

Cannon’s Conversations is Perfect Concoction of Organic Meets Digital

Cannon is a 21-year-old independent artist from South Carolina who blends strong hip/hop and R&B influences with an organic sound he developed at open mic nights with an old acoustic guitar.

“Conversations” is about ignoring our personal issues for the sake of feeling like we don’t have them. It’s easier to turn to quick tricks to feel better or ignore feeling bad entirely than to really consider and engage with how we feel. There’s a really important difference between talking and having a conversation, whether it’s with ourselves or with others—and this song is emphasizing that difference. It’s easy to talk, but it’s hard to really engage with something enough to actually have a conversation. “Conversations” shows someone not engaging — they tell themselves they’re trying but they’re not really. They’re lying

Indie Artist

Indie Pop Artist Zoe Sky Jordan Releases New Music

Following on from the success of his latest single “It’s Cold Where I’m From”Melbourne based singer/producer Rich Delinquent has returned with the epic fourth single from his debut EP of the same title DM If You Need To.

Rich Delinquent explain “the EP as whole stems from personal experiences, touching on battles with life’s hardships. Ultimately “DM If You Need To” is a songwriting form of catharsis to keep the demons at bay.”

Influenced by the likes of The WeekndBring Me the Horizon, and Odesza, the EP is entirely self-produced by Rich Delinquent in his Melbourne home studio, with the tracks deriving from a very clear vision of blending different genres of music to create something fresh with his voice being the anchor of the entire project. Rich Delinquent explain

“writing this EP was a blur. Some was done on the road whilst touring a different project, some was done abroad and some was done in my home studio. The whole project came from a very dark place that I don’t wish to share publicly yet.”

A self proclaimed “absolute perfectionist”, the writing and recording process for Rich Delinquent’s debut EP was extremely tedious – “I’ll do hundreds of takes of a song until it is perfect and need minimal tuning if any.”

Fans are set to benefit from this perfectionist attitude, with the five track EP providing a captivating insight into the artist’s personality, passion for music, and life in general.

We just wanted to make something we could be proud of, something that you can watch alone on your couch in the afternoon, or with a group of friends before you go out, something that also wouldn’t be out of place on the TV at an afters where groups of friends and strangers are sharing stories from their night out,” explains the band’s drummer, James Hunt. “Ideally it’s something that helps create a sense of shared experience and friendship in that way.”

On Wednesday night, the Grammy-nominated trio held two exclusive, sold out Australian premiere screenings of the film at Ritz Cinemas Randwick in Sydney and IMAX in Melbourne, raising $18,000 to go directly to The Red Cross for Australian bushfire aid.

Thrilled to be utilising their music for good, keys player Jon George says, “We are so humbled that showing our film, alongside our heroes The Chemical Brothers, provided us with an opportunity to help the bushfire recovery effort in this way.  Thank you to all the people who came out in support of this, a lot of people worked behind the scenes to make this happen, it feels really special to have had everyone come together for such an important cause.”

Amidst the release of their debut film and live album, RÜFÜS DU SOL set out on another world tour across the Americas and Europe, with a brand new production. Electronic Downbeat Minimalism New Music from OAFF

OAFF – HEAVY HANDED

Electronic Downbeat Minimalism New Music from OAFF

There is a certain sound that is associated with the more commercial end of the electronic music spectrum in this part of the twenty-first century – a kind of downbeat minimalism coupled with vocals that are at once ethereal yet earthbound. It is this sound that we hear on “Heavy Handed” the new single by OAFF, from his upcoming album “Feeling is Thinking”.

Hailing from Mumbai, OAFF has taken the sounds of minimal electronic music and added to it a pop sensibility best heard in the vocals of featured singer Kayan.a. The kind of stripped down production on display here is not easy to do, but OAFF pulls it off well, combining deep bass with sonic flourishes that serve to add flavor to the track. Best of all is the guitar line that finishes the track and that is sometimes hinted at throughout. Over the top of this we hear Kayan.a.’s vocals – a kind of “exhausted” delivery style that both compliments and elevates the song.

Due for release on 21 February, “Heavy Handed” should find success. With solid online streaming figures online, this track will only serve to build the profile of OAFF.

Ella Fence – All I Do Is Think EP

Ella Fence is Not Afraid To Push The Boundaries With New EP

It seems appropriate that the new EP from Ella Fence, “All I Do Is Think”, released on Valentine’s Day, 2020 – Appropriate, that is, if you like your yearly celebration of forced affection served up with a dash of irony.

The three songs that comprise this EP all explore different moods and textures – from the party stylings of “Pink Mojitos”, to the more middle of the road “She’s Looking Pretty”, and on to the more experimental electronics and introspective approach of “Japan”. Nonetheless, what holds this collection together is an almost ironic reflection on the topics of love and relationships.  Fence proudly declares in the opener that she is “not gonna give a f**k about this night” and closes “Japan” with the line, “I think I’m gonna work on me”. Traditional love songs these are not.

This is a well-produced set of electronic pop music that is not afraid to push the boundaries of the genre. And above it all soars Fence’s voice – a transcendent instrument that milks the emotions out of often understated lyrics. Like her track, “Love Me On Purpose”, that I reviewed last year, I enjoyed these tracks. As a person who does not choose to listen to pop music, it is always a pleasant surprise to hear an artist that I not only enjoy, but who is also a radio-friendly proposition.

Pools of Talent In Electronic Music Underground

Electronic Music Album

Future Sounds Anthology Vol. 1

It’s great to get away for a holiday, but it does mean that you can miss some music releases. My first review of the year is of an album that came out on January 3 whilst I was busy exploring the charms of Scotland.

Future Sounds Anthology Vol. 1, is a compilation of tracks by artists from the Electronic Music Alliance (EMA), released through the group’s imprint, Electronic Alliance Records. At 20 tracks and just on 99 minutes, this album runs the gamut of electronic music styles – from the computer game soundtrack stylings of the opening track “Shadow on the Path (Synth Mix)” by iconDARK, to the jazz-infused chill of “Empty Playground” by Naked Congress, onto the harder dance end of the spectrum on tracks like “Black Museum” by Electrostatic Nightmare Disco.

With such a wide range of top-end electronic music on offer, it is hard to pick favourites – nonetheless, for me the wonky bass of “Those Days Are Gone” by Pulp Stereo, the slow build of “Shatter” by Eonlake and the sublime trip-hop of “Don’t Tell” by Skyline Tigers were all standouts. Having said that, this is an album full of gems and will most certainly hold up to repeat listenings. Who knows what will stand as my favourites in five listens from now?

The EMA has certainly come a long way in its first year. Founders Bufinjer, DaveyHub and Nicky Havey are to be congratulated on bringing together a pool of such talent and for curating such a fine sampler of what is happening in the present-day electronic music underground. The Future Sounds Anthology Vol. 1 is a must listen.

Riotron Debuts New Synth-Pop Single “There For You” Inspired By 80’s Greats

Riotron a.k.a Electro indie-pop artist Jeff Fettes has released a new single titled “There For You” off his forthcoming debut EP ‘Dark Highway,’ due out later this year.

“There For You” is the follow up to his debut release “I’m Sorry” which in just three months has collectively garnered hundreds of thousands of streams, with its subsequent lyric video racking up more than a million views since early December.

There For You is about how thinking of the people we love can bring them to us any time we need them. It doesn’t have to be spiritual or metaphysical it’s just the power of our memories,” says Fettes. “When you can’t be with them physically, they can still be there for you across time and space. It sounds cosmic but it’s really kind of simple and comforting.”

Sonically, the music of ‘There For You’ draws on modern synth-pop and electronica sounds, mixed with 80s-influenced new wave guitar. Even the name Riotron is derived from the hit song “Rio” by Duran Duran and the fantasy sci-fi film, ‘Tron’, all iconic to the eighties era which seems to be a big inspiration for Riotron’s music and imagery.

Inspired by pop artists like Phil Collins and Madonna, Fettes started writing his own music as a teenager. While attending university, he learned recording while working at a local studio, writing and producing songs for other artists. At one point, he had jobs as a cartoonist, programmer, musician, and writer but it was his hobby as an inventor that eventually drew him into a career, a number of his concepts growing into companies.

The success he found there left little time for performing or songwriting until recently. When politics created a sharp emotional divide among his friends and family, Fettes found it hard to talk about until one day he found himself sitting at a keyboard writing “I’m Sorry” about the conflict. The songs kept coming and shortly after he formed Riotron as the outlet for his new music.

Evoking styles like dance-rock, electronic synth-pop, and even jazz, Riotron’s upcoming 2020 LP, Dark Highway, is reminiscent of an 80’s movie soundtrack, with a collection of highly personal anthems. Thematically, it’s about how our darkest moments eventually lead to hope. Riotron’s Dark Highway sends its listener on a metaphorical drive through hell that eventually leads to love, acceptance, and self-forgiveness.

New Album of Rhythmic Dark Electronic from Dispel

The Dead Daisies releases New Single Righteous Days

Indie Band

Dark electronic collective Dispel are previewing their new single ‘Temptation’ via a new video representing the ‘Last Trial’ stage of the Hero’s Journey. The video features a return of the Crusading Knight ‘Levie.’ Having quested and gained the ‘Sword of Knowledge’ in the ‘Modal Consequence’ music video, he must now be tested to prove worthy of this new power and strength.

Like the previous single ‘Modal Consequence’, this new track features hearty front-and-center mezzo-soprano vocals by Ravensea against the background of glacial industrial rhythms. Both tracks offer a taste of their album ‘Lore’.

Dispel’s sound is laced with dark electronic melodies, vocal hooks and praising spiritual quests through driving beats and oscillating keyboards. Together, they seek to create a musical narrative praising historic lore, mythology and mysticism.

This album was produced by Mike Textbeak, a Cleopatra Records artist (as TEXTBEAK) and early DJ from the Witchhouse scene. He has worked with an impressive line-up including legendary producer John Fryer, Mark Stewart, Bestial Mouths, Peter Hope, Cyanotic, Vaselyne and Searmanas, to name but a few. An expert in underground music, he hosts the weekly CXB7 radio show on Hexx 9 Radio.

Comprised of nine tracks, this album was mastered at The Cage Studios in Coventry, UK by Martin Bowes of Attrition, well known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, Psychic TV and Steven Severin of Siouxsie & the Banshees.

Dispel is comprised of Scott Dispel, Ravensea and Sean Gallows. Scott Dispel was a founding member of the old school hardcore band Face Value and is also currently the drummer for TEXTBEAK. A studio engineer and producer, in 2005, he was voted Cleveland’s best nightclub DJ by Scene Magazine.

Scott Dispel speaks about the new video: “Is he a true Hero? Or will his new found power corrupt and tempt him to become a tyrant. Too many leaders throughout history have succumbed to the temptation to abuse their power, often to the detriment of their subjects. In fact, the 20th century was rife with despots. However, collectively we continue to endure and strive for far better…”

“We hope to inspire others to take the first step to “attacking their destiny” to becoming the best versions of themselves and in having the courage to strive for achievement, despite the unknown challenges that will surely arise”.

Dispel has unlikely roots in the early 90’s hardcore punk scene while Scott Dispel. While on tour with Face Value, a seed was planted in an underground goth-Industrial club in Berlin. Exposed to a new sound and different culture, this experience made a lasting impression. Though the raw truth of the punk scene remained, it was clear that electronic music was the next chapter and that this required a fresh approach.

Dispel’s music is also inspired by such artists as Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Clan of Xymox, Depeche Mode, VNV Nation and Blutengle on the one hand and Delerium, The Misfits and The Cramps on the other.

After completing a degree in music and recording studio internship, Dispel’s commitment to the art of music was solidified. Feeling the local underground scene was sorely lacking and inspired by Fantasy gaming, mythology and mysticism, the foundation was set. Fate again intervened when he met Ravensea, a Berklee Vocal Performance / Music Therapy major with a powerful voice and insight into music’s transcendence of language and cultural barriers.

Both Dispel videos were directed, filmed and edited by Rafeeq Roberts. Scott Dispel fills the role of the Plague Doctor. Ravensea appears as herself. Jennifer Haney plays the Vampire Queen, as well as handling make-up and wardrobe. Levie Mckenzie plays the Crusading Knight and Morgan Irvine plays the Vampire King.

The full ‘Lore’ LP will be released today, January 10 and will be available on vinyl, CD and digital download. It can be pre-ordered via the artist’s website. The ‘Modal Consequence’ single is currently offered as a free download via Bandcamp .
