OAFF – HEAVY HANDED

Electronic Downbeat Minimalism New Music from OAFF

There is a certain sound that is associated with the more commercial end of the electronic music spectrum in this part of the twenty-first century – a kind of downbeat minimalism coupled with vocals that are at once ethereal yet earthbound. It is this sound that we hear on “Heavy Handed” the new single by OAFF, from his upcoming album “Feeling is Thinking”.

Hailing from Mumbai, OAFF has taken the sounds of minimal electronic music and added to it a pop sensibility best heard in the vocals of featured singer Kayan.a. The kind of stripped down production on display here is not easy to do, but OAFF pulls it off well, combining deep bass with sonic flourishes that serve to add flavor to the track. Best of all is the guitar line that finishes the track and that is sometimes hinted at throughout. Over the top of this we hear Kayan.a.’s vocals – a kind of “exhausted” delivery style that both compliments and elevates the song.

Due for release on 21 February, “Heavy Handed” should find success. With solid online streaming figures online, this track will only serve to build the profile of OAFF.

Ella Fence is Not Afraid To Push The Boundaries with New EP

Ella Fence – All I Do Is Think EP

Ella Fence is Not Afraid To Push The Boundaries With New EP

It seems appropriate that the new EP from Ella Fence, “All I Do Is Think”, released on Valentine’s Day, 2020 – Appropriate, that is, if you like your yearly celebration of forced affection served up with a dash of irony.

The three songs that comprise this EP all explore different moods and textures – from the party stylings of “Pink Mojitos”, to the more middle of the road “She’s Looking Pretty”, and on to the more experimental electronics and introspective approach of “Japan”. Nonetheless, what holds this collection together is an almost ironic reflection on the topics of love and relationships.  Fence proudly declares in the opener that she is “not gonna give a f**k about this night” and closes “Japan” with the line, “I think I’m gonna work on me”. Traditional love songs these are not.

This is a well-produced set of electronic pop music that is not afraid to push the boundaries of the genre. And above it all soars Fence’s voice – a transcendent instrument that milks the emotions out of often understated lyrics. Like her track, “Love Me On Purpose”, that I reviewed last year, I enjoyed these tracks. As a person who does not choose to listen to pop music, it is always a pleasant surprise to hear an artist that I not only enjoy, but who is also a radio-friendly proposition.

Electronic Music Album

Future Sounds Anthology Vol. 1

It’s great to get away for a holiday, but it does mean that you can miss some music releases. My first review of the year is of an album that came out on January 3 whilst I was busy exploring the charms of Scotland.

Future Sounds Anthology Vol. 1, is a compilation of tracks by artists from the Electronic Music Alliance (EMA), released through the group’s imprint, Electronic Alliance Records. At 20 tracks and just on 99 minutes, this album runs the gamut of electronic music styles – from the computer game soundtrack stylings of the opening track “Shadow on the Path (Synth Mix)” by iconDARK, to the jazz-infused chill of “Empty Playground” by Naked Congress, onto the harder dance end of the spectrum on tracks like “Black Museum” by Electrostatic Nightmare Disco.

With such a wide range of top-end electronic music on offer, it is hard to pick favourites – nonetheless, for me the wonky bass of “Those Days Are Gone” by Pulp Stereo, the slow build of “Shatter” by Eonlake and the sublime trip-hop of “Don’t Tell” by Skyline Tigers were all standouts. Having said that, this is an album full of gems and will most certainly hold up to repeat listenings. Who knows what will stand as my favourites in five listens from now?

The EMA has certainly come a long way in its first year. Founders Bufinjer, DaveyHub and Nicky Havey are to be congratulated on bringing together a pool of such talent and for curating such a fine sampler of what is happening in the present-day electronic music underground. The Future Sounds Anthology Vol. 1 is a must listen.

Byron Langley Releases World Class Debut Indie-Pop EP

Riotron Debuts New Synth-Pop Single “There For You” Inspired By 80’s Greats

Riotron a.k.a Electro indie-pop artist Jeff Fettes has released a new single titled “There For You” off his forthcoming debut EP ‘Dark Highway,’ due out later this year.

“There For You” is the follow up to his debut release “I’m Sorry” which in just three months has collectively garnered hundreds of thousands of streams, with its subsequent lyric video racking up more than a million views since early December.

There For You is about how thinking of the people we love can bring them to us any time we need them. It doesn’t have to be spiritual or metaphysical it’s just the power of our memories,” says Fettes. “When you can’t be with them physically, they can still be there for you across time and space. It sounds cosmic but it’s really kind of simple and comforting.”

Sonically, the music of ‘There For You’ draws on modern synth-pop and electronica sounds, mixed with 80s-influenced new wave guitar. Even the name Riotron is derived from the hit song “Rio” by Duran Duran and the fantasy sci-fi film, ‘Tron’, all iconic to the eighties era which seems to be a big inspiration for Riotron’s music and imagery.

Inspired by pop artists like Phil Collins and Madonna, Fettes started writing his own music as a teenager. While attending university, he learned recording while working at a local studio, writing and producing songs for other artists. At one point, he had jobs as a cartoonist, programmer, musician, and writer but it was his hobby as an inventor that eventually drew him into a career, a number of his concepts growing into companies.

The success he found there left little time for performing or songwriting until recently. When politics created a sharp emotional divide among his friends and family, Fettes found it hard to talk about until one day he found himself sitting at a keyboard writing “I’m Sorry” about the conflict. The songs kept coming and shortly after he formed Riotron as the outlet for his new music.

Evoking styles like dance-rock, electronic synth-pop, and even jazz, Riotron’s upcoming 2020 LP, Dark Highway, is reminiscent of an 80’s movie soundtrack, with a collection of highly personal anthems. Thematically, it’s about how our darkest moments eventually lead to hope. Riotron’s Dark Highway sends its listener on a metaphorical drive through hell that eventually leads to love, acceptance, and self-forgiveness.

New Album of Rhythmic Dark Electronic from Dispel

The Dead Daisies releases New Single Righteous Days

Indie Band

Dark electronic collective Dispel are previewing their new single ‘Temptation’ via a new video representing the ‘Last Trial’ stage of the Hero’s Journey. The video features a return of the Crusading Knight ‘Levie.’ Having quested and gained the ‘Sword of Knowledge’ in the ‘Modal Consequence’ music video, he must now be tested to prove worthy of this new power and strength.

Like the previous single ‘Modal Consequence’, this new track features hearty front-and-center mezzo-soprano vocals by Ravensea against the background of glacial industrial rhythms. Both tracks offer a taste of their album ‘Lore’.

Dispel’s sound is laced with dark electronic melodies, vocal hooks and praising spiritual quests through driving beats and oscillating keyboards. Together, they seek to create a musical narrative praising historic lore, mythology and mysticism.

This album was produced by Mike Textbeak, a Cleopatra Records artist (as TEXTBEAK) and early DJ from the Witchhouse scene. He has worked with an impressive line-up including legendary producer John Fryer, Mark Stewart, Bestial Mouths, Peter Hope, Cyanotic, Vaselyne and Searmanas, to name but a few. An expert in underground music, he hosts the weekly CXB7 radio show on Hexx 9 Radio.

Comprised of nine tracks, this album was mastered at The Cage Studios in Coventry, UK by Martin Bowes of Attrition, well known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, Psychic TV and Steven Severin of Siouxsie & the Banshees.

Dispel is comprised of Scott Dispel, Ravensea and Sean Gallows. Scott Dispel was a founding member of the old school hardcore band Face Value and is also currently the drummer for TEXTBEAK. A studio engineer and producer, in 2005, he was voted Cleveland’s best nightclub DJ by Scene Magazine.

Scott Dispel speaks about the new video: “Is he a true Hero? Or will his new found power corrupt and tempt him to become a tyrant. Too many leaders throughout history have succumbed to the temptation to abuse their power, often to the detriment of their subjects. In fact, the 20th century was rife with despots. However, collectively we continue to endure and strive for far better…”

“We hope to inspire others to take the first step to “attacking their destiny” to becoming the best versions of themselves and in having the courage to strive for achievement, despite the unknown challenges that will surely arise”.

Dispel has unlikely roots in the early 90’s hardcore punk scene while Scott Dispel. While on tour with Face Value, a seed was planted in an underground goth-Industrial club in Berlin. Exposed to a new sound and different culture, this experience made a lasting impression. Though the raw truth of the punk scene remained, it was clear that electronic music was the next chapter and that this required a fresh approach.

Dispel’s music is also inspired by such artists as Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Clan of Xymox, Depeche Mode, VNV Nation and Blutengle on the one hand and Delerium, The Misfits and The Cramps on the other.

After completing a degree in music and recording studio internship, Dispel’s commitment to the art of music was solidified. Feeling the local underground scene was sorely lacking and inspired by Fantasy gaming, mythology and mysticism, the foundation was set. Fate again intervened when he met Ravensea, a Berklee Vocal Performance / Music Therapy major with a powerful voice and insight into music’s transcendence of language and cultural barriers.

Both Dispel videos were directed, filmed and edited by Rafeeq Roberts. Scott Dispel fills the role of the Plague Doctor. Ravensea appears as herself. Jennifer Haney plays the Vampire Queen, as well as handling make-up and wardrobe. Levie Mckenzie plays the Crusading Knight and Morgan Irvine plays the Vampire King.

The full ‘Lore’ LP will be released today, January 10 and will be available on vinyl, CD and digital download. It can be pre-ordered via the artist’s website. The ‘Modal Consequence’ single is currently offered as a free download via Bandcamp .

Gorran’s New Electro-Pop Single Roses Inspiring you to dream

Gorran’s New Electro-Pop Single Roses Inspiring You To Dream

Indie Artist

Gorran is a London based vocalist and songwriter whose music fuses elements of dance, pop, R&B and hip-hop. Bursting with intricate, polished production, the young musician produces contemporary pop with dark undertones, which has been resonating with audiences across the globe.

Gorran’s passion and flair for music was evident from a young age, where during his time at the prestigious BRIT School (alumni including Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Rex Orange County), he developed his distinctive sound and dynamic live show. Since graduating, Gorran has been writing and recording with industry professionals to produce original, bold and gritty pop tracks. Influenced by the likes of Post Malone, Lauv and Billie Eilish, Gorran strives to create music that oozes with real and authentic emotions. He shares, “Whether it’s sadness, joy, anger, nostalgia, fear – I just want them to feel something. I think that is what makes a great song and so that is what I will always aim to achieve”.

Following the release of ‘Easy For You’ and ‘Hush’ which both garnered commercial acclaim, accumulating over 100 thousand Spotify streams in only a few short weeks, Gorran is now unveiling the highly anticipated ‘I Don’t Love You Anymore’. The powerful, emotive ballad, supported by effortlessly classy melodies and rich compelling vocals, delivers an emotional and heartfelt anthem. Though truly poignant and agonising at its core, the song also evokes a deep sense of subconscious relief. With such a profoundly personal yet universal message, the track will resonate with everyone who has experienced the pain of heartache.

The self-produced track, which was mixed by Gavin Goldberg (Chrissie Hynde, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne) reminisces the story of a love lost. Gorran admits how the song helped him heal, acting as a form of therapy. “I was finding it incredibly difficult to express exactly what I was trying to say lyrically in those last few weeks of being with her – it was only once we ended the relationship that I found I was able to completely let go and properly finish the song. It really helped me come to terms with how I was feeling, and how I had been feeling for quite a while. It became clear that the verses were a poetic summary of the fundamental weaknesses in the relationship. The middle 8 was the last section I wrote, and were some of the most painful lyrics I’ve ever had to write, as I realised whilst writing it that it was one final parting note to the person I thought I loved. The song honestly means more to me than almost anything”.

Then there is ‘Roses’. Thematically the stunning single narrates the suppression of dreams and aspirations, particularly in young girls. Originally inspired by his little sister and also greatly inspired by the likes of Greta Thunberg, the song spurs this generation to dream, act and shape our future for the better. Gorran confides,

“Young women such as Thunberg are paving the way for a whole generation of people to make positive changes in our society and so it’s time we listen to them and take them seriously. I think having a little sister myself, who at the time of the writing of the song was only 12 years old, made the subject matter even more poignant for me”.

Gorran has seen success opening for KT Tunstall on her UK tour, performing to sold-out audiences across the nation, as well as having graced the stage at the legendary London Roundhouse. With the hope that his music will encourage listeners to be honest with themselves about what makes them happy and to put their mental health first, Gorran continues to produce thought-provoking and powerful music.

Australia’s Jordz Releases Debut Chill Single Aptly Titled Bushfire

Electronic Indie Artist

Jordz

“Bushfire”

Those of you living outside of Australia may not be aware that large parts of the country have been up in flames throughout the month of November. Lives have been lost, properties have been destroyed, and koala populations have been decimated. So it was with a degree of trepidation that I pushed play on the track I was to review for this week – a track titled “Bushfire”.

The creation of 19-year-old Melbourne producer and DJ, “Bushfire” is a mid-tempo piece of EDM infused pop music that charts the artist’s flight from the encroaching flames that threaten to end her. Starting with the ominous sounds of helicopters, we soon find out that our protagonist is “stuck in a cloud of smoke” and that “there is nothing (she) can do”. Coupled with the melancholy instrumentation, we are left thinking that the narrative will have only one ending. However, the story reaches a happy (ish) conclusion and Jordz proclaims that “there is something (she) can do”.

Despite my initial misgivings, I was won over by this track. The narrative builds a quiet tension and the production is first rate (an opinion borne out by the fact that at just 16, Jordz won the Monash University ‘Emerging Producer Prize of 2017’).  It is encouraging to know that there are such talented young songwriters emerging in Australia. I look forward to seeing where this artist’s journey takes her.

The new single, Electric Dreams of Tokyo ,” from White Elephant Orchestra features on his forthcoming Debut album and is my fan letter to Japanese painter Yayoi Kusama.

“I wanted it to be upbeat because I think she has taken her mental health struggle and turned it around to the most positive benefit ever; being able to heal herself through her art.”

This inspired the lyric:

You flipped the charge

So you could march

To the sound of your own drum.

When I began producing “ Electric Dreams of Tokyo ,” I thought that I would pass it onto someone else, but at a certain point I realized that no one else could produce this but me.”

Sätilä Combines Fresh Fusion Of Infectious Indie Music

Finnish born, London based artist Sätilä, aka Teemu Sätilä, combines a fresh fusion of infectious alternative/indie music with rich pop soundscapes. Having started writing songs at the age of seven after learning the piano, Sätilä spent his formative years in an alternative rock band before moving to Sydney, Australia, where he studied songwriting. His time spent there defined who he was as an artist and the songwriter soon realised his ambition to create something that was entirely his own, eventually heading back to Europe to follow his own sound.

Leading single ‘Like You Do’ was inspired by past relationships and narrates the struggle of receiving love from someone who you think is more gracious and trusting than you are. Highlighting Sätilä’s velvety vocals and impressive range, the track comes to life through twinkling synths, pulsating basslines and vibrant melodies. The musician reveals,

“This song has been the defining cornerstone of a bigger body of work I’ve been working on when it comes to production and the sonic vision”.

Produced by Mikko Pennanen, the song emulates fragments of Foster the People and Tame Impala, featuring analogue synths and illustrating Sätilä’s goal of blending organic and electronic elements together.

“When I was a kid I listened to a lot of mainstream pop and as a teenager I got into alternative and indie rock. I feel like that has shaped me more than I thought it did. I know people say indie rock has had its moment but I’m just not sure. It still makes me feel. I think there is room for all sorts of music so why restrict people’s expression just because it’s not a trend and if it still makes people feel something”, expresses the Finnish native.

Sätilä hopes his music will be an aid in times when you feel you are not enough. Through uplifting lyrics and building progressive components, ‘Like You Do’ transforms into the ultimate pep-talk, self-love anthem. He confides, “I hope my music inspires people to live their life to the fullest. Make the change you need to make whether that’s circumstance or your attitude. Make the dream a reality. Love yourself and others. Make every situation better when you come around”.

Sätilä has seen success with his previous releases garnering close to a million streams on Spotify alone. He has received attention from the likes of YleX (Finnish equivalent of BBC Radio 1), as well as being playlisted on official Spotify playlists in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Canada. ‘Like You Do’ is currently available worldwide.

Heartwrenching New Electronic Single from Black Summer

EDM Indie Artist

Electronic music wunderkind Black Summer has today announced his new, heartwrenching single Double Edge, featuring Australian vocalist Aston, out today.  The young artist, otherwise known as Rhys Toms, has also dropped a breathtaking video clip to accompany Double Edge, directed by Tim Maxx, and starring Aston herself alongside actor David John Craig.

It’s been a wild ride for Rhys, since he was Unearthed by triple j at the age of 11 as one of the country’s most exciting young producers and Double Edge is yet another example of Black Summer’s prowess as a producer, and leaves the listener wondering if this is what he’s capable of at just 16 years old, there’s no telling what will come next.

Double Edge is affecting, melancholy; the kind of song listeners will put on for comfort in the midst of a breakup or breakdown.  Gentle piano plays calmly throughout the swooping, sparkling dance of synthesisers and percussion.  Aston’s heavenly vocal guides the listener as the song reaches its peak, resulting in a deeply poignant journey from start to end.  Written alongside Aston and songwriter Starley, Rhys explains how the collaboration came about,

When I was in LA, I was lucky enough to have a writing session with Starley and Aston. Double Edge came from a session where myself and Starley really connected.  We had so much fun, I’ve been a fan of hers ever since I heard Call On Me it was a huge international hit with over a billion streams, so I was just fortunate to write with her.”  Double Edge is a deep, introspective track, Rhys enlightens, “The song itself is quite personal, but I feel like we’ve all been there – a situation where we may have been attracted to the wrong person or someone who wasn’t good for us.  From my interpretation, it’s a song about a toxic relationship and how it can be damaging but you keep getting drawn in at the same time.  Creatively, this song was so much fun to work on.  Starley is an incredible writer, and Aston is an amazing vocalist and songwriter.  I was lucky enough to be able to really enjoy the process.”

The clip for Double Edge is epic, sharp and moving, as Aston sings to her wounded partner, a crow glides through the sky, a white wolf gallops through a forest, and the grey, snowy landscape threatens to overwhelm everything in its wake.  The colour palette of deep, thunderous grey, white and deep blue reflects the mood of the song perfectly, and awe-inspiring drone shots of the snowy mountain landscape are sure to impress.  Speaking on the meaning behind the clip, Rhys says,

“I feel like the clip is quite symbolic, and can be taken a few different ways.  I see it as being about a toxic relationship that has hurt the people in it.  The crow and the wolf, to me, symbolise the struggle of chasing someone who is only going to damage you and make everything worse.  Tim Maxx, who has been the creative brain behind my past video clips as well as this one, has done an amazing job communicating a message through this video that can be interpreted in many ways, which was exactly what I wanted this project to feel like.”

Double Edge is just the first taste of the new Black Summer tunes that are yet to come, as Rhys spends all his spare time – between the pesky teenage commitment of school – writing and producing, both from his hometown in Canberra and Los Angeles.
