Daniella Mason brilliant New EP, Mental State

Independent Singer

Daniella Mason is a completely independent artist, constantly pushing against the boundaries of genre. The alternative pop singer/songwriter revels in taking full charge of her creative process: from writing and playing music to styling her own photo shoots and doing graphic design,” Flaunt Magazine ‘s Morgan Vickery wrote on Friday. “Shot and edited by Dylan Reyes, the video juxtaposes the dark, small corners against vast, bright spaces, deep well and ocean against dry land, gradually bringing chaos into order.”

Fresh off of a new album release and a performance at Bonnaroo, Daniella Mason premiered a dreamy new visual last week that continues her Mental State EP and State of Mine sound series.

“The aim was to create a dream sequence,” Mason explains of the video. “It felt like the only way to make this beautifully existential feeling of wandering throughout your mind… how aimless and untethered it can feel. But this video also tells the story of inviting someone into the farthest reaches of your psyche, both dark and light, and the vulnerability of it all. When it came to the specific visuals we wanted to incorporate, I wanted to pull directly from the way I have pictured my own mind.”

While Mason is no stranger to pop commerciality, earning millions of streams on Spotify and praise from the likes of Popjustice, V Magazine, and Refinery 29 , it’s her left-of-center musicianship and distinct powerhouse vocals  that afford her credit in tastemaker and alternative spaces, as well. Mason’s material is pop for pop’s sake— no flashy aesthetics or overhyped production, just a knife-edge balance between club banger and emotional gut punch that blurs genre lines to convert fans of all musical sensibilities.

Mental State, released on June 14th, is the second of four EPs that she’ll be releasing over the course of the next year as part of her State of Mine sound series. Each album ( Emotional State , Mental State , Physical State, and Spiritual State) explores the different parts of our humanity that we tend to suppress and have difficulty embracing.

The new visual for “Deepest of Wells” is streaming now on  YouTube, with the Mental State EP available on
